Believe it or not, there ARE other games coming out today besides Diablo 3. One of those is called Akai Katana, a side scrolling shooter from Japanese developer Cave and published by Rising Star Games for the Xbox 360. The game features two player local co-op in an industrial inspired Japanese setting with slick HD visuals and gameplay. The good news is the game is priced at a budget friendly $40.

Akai Katana Orientation Trailer Prepares Gamers for Bullet Hell

Japanese developer CAVE's latest shoot-em-up Akai Katana hits stores this Tuesday, May 15 courtesy of Rising Star Games' newly-opened US branch. Bullet hell shmups like Akai Katana are notoroiously difficult, filling the screen with hundreds of enemy bullets at once. Rising Star knows this and has considerately created an orientation trailer, explaining just how the gameplay works. It won't make your reflexes any faster, but at least you'll know how to use the ship's various attacks and Phantom mode transformation before you play.

Shoot-em-up fans across America rejoiced when Rising Star Games announced their plans to bring Akai Katana stateside. The game is widely considered to be Japanese shmup maker Cave's magnum opus - or at least its swan swong, since the developer has switched to making games exclusively for mobile platforms like Windows Phone. Of course, we're interested in Akai Katana for its 2 player local co-op, a welcome feature in any shmup. Rising Star has graciously provided Co-Optimus with several exclusive co-op screenshots.

You could describe Rising Star Games as the Atlus of Europe. No, I don't mean they hold Europe on their shoulders - that'd be Atlas. They just publish really cool and sometimes niche games, including King of Fighters XIII (an Atlus title in the US) and region-free co-op shoot-em-up DoDonPachi Resurrection. Now Rising Star is expanding to the US, which can only be good for gamers. Their first American release will be Akai Katana, another Xbox 360 co-op shmup from Japanese developer Cave.
