It's a rather interesting take on the iconic game. Up to four players must work together in order to complete a given scenario; if even one player dies, everyone loses. The scenarios themselves provide the players with a specific objective that they must complete in order to win, a diagram for how you setup/construct the game board from a selection of board pieces, and info on the various enemies that will be dropped in and items that can be discovered. To help create some of that feeling of unease and scares you'd encounter while playing the game, Steamforged utilizes something they call the "Tension Deck." At the end of every player's turn, they draw a card from this deck, which might cause some bad things to happen. It sounds, in practice, like the mechanic from Pandemic where players draw cards from a deck at the end of each turn and hope they don't draw an "Epidemic" card.

Designer board games are getting quite popular these days, to the point where we’re starting to see quality digital adaptations of them. Though co-op board games are a popular genre (check out Marc’s Tabletop Co-op series), surprisingly few of these games have been adapted from their cardboard forms. Mysterium bucks this trend, being a ...

If you are anything like me, you are approaching the level of burnout with zombie themed games. From board games to video games to comics and TV, zombies are literally everywhere. There are several co-op board games featuring zombies, including three we have already covered in this column: Zombies Keep Out!, Dead Panic, and Zombicide. What does Dea...

One of the first cooperative board games we ever covered here at Co-Optimus was Castle Ravenloft. Released in 2010, this vampire-themed tabletop dungeon crawl was the first of the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System games. It was quickly followed by two more games in the series, Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt. Fans thought the series ...

While many of the classic module's themes remain, the rules have been retooled to fit the WizKids line of "D&D Adventure System Cooperative Play" series of board games.  The story has been streamlined into thirteen separate missions, which can be played independently or sequentially for that full "campaign" feeling.

In 2008, a card game called Dominion was published, and an entire genre of card games was born. Known as deckbuilders, these games give players a small deck of cards to start with, and allow them to add to and customize their deck each turn. By fine tuning the contents of your deck, you can amass the most points, or defeat or your foes, or, most im...

One of the issues that constantly arises here at Co-Optimus headquarters is defining exactly what is, and is not, co-op. A good portion of feedback we get from users of the site is “why isn’t game X in your database? It’s totally co-op” when it really isn’t. According to this blurb from our “About” page:...

It's time once again for another edition of Tabletop Co-Op. Today we will take a look at one of the oldest co-op board games we have covered. Lord of the Rings, originally published in 2000, puts players in the role of the hobbits on their quest to destroy the One Ring and thwart Sauron. The game combines hand management and gorgeous modul...
