We dive back head first into World War II, this time co-op style, in Call of Duty World at War. A first for the series, the game supports co-op through the entire campaign as well as a 4 player co-op zombie mode. Is this game a worthy successor of the CoD name? Or is it shades of Call of Duty 3 all over again?

The first week sales of Call of Duty: World at War have outsold Call of Duty 4's debut by more than 2 to 1.
This new info comes from gamesindustry.biz, who claim that 4-player co-op title World at War is also currently the top seller overall in the United Kingdom.
This makes perfect sense to us! Games with online co-op require co-op partners, and apparently there are plenty of those in Europe.
A quick search for North America sales rendered nothing yet; perhaps it's still too early, or maybe we just don't have the most advanced source.
Unsurprisingly, Guitar Hero World Tour and Gears of War 2 also made it onto the list, which can be viewed after the "Read More" link.

For the most part, it's fair to say that GameStop doesn't really side with gamers very often. Ridiculously low trade-in values, bonus content missing from used games, trade-in and pre-order credit not transferrable between stores, clueless employees, etc. marr the shopping experience.
Regardless: some things they do right, and this week is a good example. While playing the World at War beta version with my brother -- who lives in a suburb of Austin, Texas -- he received a phone call informing him that his retail copy would be available tonight, November 10th.

In a surprising but pleasant twist to the usual video game marketing story, Activision has partnered with the United Service Organization to connect members of the United States Armed Forces with civilian gamers via Call of Duty: World at War and Guitar Hero III. The idea of the project is to boost moral, a mission that the USO was formed for and is dedicated to.
Forthcoming World at War launch events in Washington D.C. and San Francisco will see everyday gamers playing co-op (and versus) games with active members of the U.S. military. Furthermore, $10 from each World at War copy purchased will be donated by Activision to the continued efforts of the USO.
Activision/Blizzard's press release also states that over $100,000 worth of Guitar Hero III software and peripherals have been made available to mobile USO units and stationary lounges at various military bases.

Call of Duty: World at War launches next week for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in all it's 4 player co-op glory. And that includes unlockable zombie apocalypse mode. Just to recap how awesome this game is, I've broken it down into simple components.
4 Player Co-Op + Jack Bauer Voice Overs + Zombies + Flamethrowers = Awesome.
See that was simple. As if there wasn't enough awesomeness on the left side, Activision has unbalanced our elemental equation of awesomeness further by throwing rock n' roll into the mix. DAMN IT TO HELL.
The trailer is intended for mature audiences only.

If you saw our previous story on Call of Duty: World at War's secret zombie mode, then you know this is going to be all kinds of awesome. But after getting our grubby little hands on the official trailer, well, this is going to be all kinds of awesome with a side of exploded zombie heads.
The trailer does a great job of showing you the absolute need to work cooperatively to stay alive as you are relentlessly assaulted by wave after wave of undead Nazi soldiers. Looks like Left 4 Dead has some competition from an unlikely source...not that Valve is worried.
The full trailer is embedded after the break, but I warn you, it's intended for mature audiences only. You must be 18 or older to read on.

If Call of Duty: World at War's 4 player co-op campaign mode didn't interest you, perhaps the latest revelation will. Sit down. No, really sit down for this. Oh you are? OK then.
What happens when you cross Left 4 Dead with Gears of War 2's Horde mode and set it in the Call of Duty: World at War universe? You get a friggin AWESOME looking 4 player co-op mode that becomes available after completing the game's single player. This fall just isn't fair.
The zombie apocalypse mode not only features wave after wave of the Nazi undead in 4 player co-op, it actually has a strategy element to it. As you complete each wave, you'll earn money. This money can then be used to buy objects and items to defend your fortification. You see - you aren't going anywhere. The zombies, they are coming for you. Wave after wave into your little rickety old hideout. The only thing you can do is throw stuff into the windows and doors to slow their pursuit of your brains down. We've got some footage of the new mode posted after the Read More link.
Seriously, who's NOT getting this game now?
The competitive multiplayer beta may have just begun for Call of Duty: World at War, but that's not what interests us. We want to know about the game's co-op mode, and thankfully we have some hands on impressions with Activision's latest. Previews, Screens and Video are all yours, so read on!

Just because my gamerscore is over 55 thousand, that doesn't mean I'm an achievement whore. That also doesn't mean I don't love hearing about a game's upcoming achievements. And it especially doesn't mean I don't like to hear when there are co-op specific achievements. Got that? I'll try again. I like achievements, especially when they are co-op. Damn, that was much easier.
There's good news on the Call of Duty front as the latest game will feature 14 specific achievements for the game's 4 player co-op mode. While most of them are unlockable in single player, there are 3 or 4 that will require you to play the game's cooperative mode. These include both trying the game's competitive co-op and normal co-op modes.
The rest of the achivements seem to be tied to bonus objectives in the game like killing a certain amount of enemies or using only a specific weapon. The full list of achievements are posted after the Read More link.

Call of Duty: World at War's announced four player co-op mode certainly put the game into the collective mind here at Co-Optimus. Well, it seems like the crew at Treyarch have co-op on their mind this week. The latest blog entry into their IGN blog is entitled "Building Co-Op From the Group Up." In the blog post, they discuss cooperative and competitive co-op, as well as the design behind them. In the blog, they also discuss the risk they were taking by adding co-op to a Call of Duty game.
After all, there is a certain trend-setting standard that you have to live up to with each new Call of Duty title – this would be the first time in the title’s history that players would be able to play online together through the kinds of levels that were previously only playable in Single Player.
The blog post is very informative, and gives great insight as to why World at War has co-op. Hit up the link and check it out.
