Saints Row 3's Insanity is Getting Prettied Up

2:18 AM on 8/30/2010 by Jim "txshurricane" McLaughlin

See this little Saints Row 2 gem? The .45-firing Omar Epps wannabe dressed up like a hot dog? Well, it may be standard fare to Volition fans, but nonetheless I call it nuttiness. And according to publisher THQ, Volition is making Saints Row 3's nuttiness is being enhanced visually.

In fact, THQ don Danny Bilson compared the prettier graphics to the visuals of this generation's Grand Theft Auto. That's a pretty high hurdle to clear. Of course, if Saints Row 3 delivers a great co-op experience, graphics won't matter near as much as THQ thinks they will.

Volition: Making Open World Co-Op is "Gratifying"

8:21 PM on 3/25/2010 by Jim "txshurricane" McLaughlin

Saints Row 2 featured true open-world co-op...something of a rarity in games.

Volition - creator of Saints Row 2 - spilled the beans on just how difficult crafting an open-world co-op game can be. Doing so without implementing tethers (like in Mercenaries 2: World in Flames) is apparently more of a technical achievement than most of us realized, according to designer David Bowring. "Pain and suffering" were the words David used to describe the process, but followed shortly by "gratifying". In fact, he went so far as to claim that a game's shelf life is extended by cooperative play, thanks to the inherently social nature of co-op.

For us, it can be very frustrating to hear developers blame the lack of true co-op on technology, and it's encouraging to know that it really is the case; it's not always a poor excuse. From Volition's point of view, co-op is not being treated properly unless the game is designed for it from the ground up. David's statements reaffirms what we believe is the future of gaming, and it's nice to see more and more acknowledgement for co-op in the games industry.

Saint's Row 3 Coming Soon (ish) 2011-12

7:50 AM on 2/4/2010 by Sam "Samoza" Tyler

Saint's Row 2 Yesterday

If you are the type of person that feels naked without at least a cone on your head, then THQ’s CEO, Brian Farrell, may be the man to phone up and thank for some great news for co-op fans.  Although silly, overly violent and morally dubious,

Saints Row 2 was great co-op fun.  Two players were able to play through the entire campaign and take part in a plethora of mini games; what could be more family fun than jumping in front of cars together for an insurance scam?

Co-Opularity

10:44 AM on 1/27/2010 by Sam "Samoza" Tyler

The 2009 co-op game of the year for us was Halo 3: ODST, but did it deserve it? Was there something social at play? A popular game or franchise is always likely to sell more copies than a new IP and as a result of this there are more people playing it, creating a phenomenon we call Co-opularity.

Saint's Row 2 DLC "Ultor Exposed" Released Today!

4:42 PM on 4/23/2009 by Marc "DjinniMan" Allie

No sir, no phallic imagery here.

The latest DLC for 2 player co-op title Saint's Row 2 is now available!  "Ultor Exposed", as it is called, looks to be a worthwhile purchase for fans of co-op!

Disgruntled Ultor microbiologist Tera Patrick holds the key to the corporation’s illicit research activities and revenue generating schemes. Help Tera dismantle the Ultor Corporation by exposing the megacorp's seedy operations to the citizens of Stilwater. Battle through three all new co-op enabled missions. Commandeer new air and ground vehicles including attack aircraft and luxury sports cars. Customize your character with new hairstyles, law enforcement uniforms, and all new clothes. Own the streets in new Strong Arm and Gangsta Brawl multiplayer maps. These are your Saints and this is your city like you’ve never seen it before…fully exposed!

You'll recall that Tera Patrick is a porn star.  "Fully exposed", huh?  Hmm.  Whatever you do, don't go looking for images of her to use for a news post while you are at work.  If you do, immediately clear your browser's cookies, history, and cached files, and deny everything. I'm just saying.

You can add the Saint's Row 2 DLC to your Xbox 360 queue at the link below.

Saint's Row 2 DLC Goes Hardcore

12:37 PM on 3/31/2009 by Marc "DjinniMan" Allie

I'm going to begin this news post with one of the most bizarre developer quotes in recent memory.

"Consider this: You've got Tera Patrick on speed dial," Volition's James Torbit described. "She's unloading an assault rifle into a Masako super soldier while you're driving around a truck full of dead bodies. In your garage you've got an armored vehicle that fires heat-seeking missiles as fast as you can pull the trigger... and you're wearing a new alien costume. Honestly, WTF is going on here?"

That seems to be a fair question.  Torbit is describing the upcoming DLC pack for Saint's Row 2.  The pack will be entitled "Ultor Exposed".  Speaking of exposure, the aforementioned Tera Patrick is an "adult film" star.  No word on how much of Ms. Patrick will be exposed in the game, if any, but that's what the internet is for, after all.  As far as co-op goes, Ultor Exposed will feature "a new co-op metagame that tracks your performance during missions in co-op and hands out bonus cash to the player with the better score."  This DLC sounds interesting, on many different levels!
