A team-up of Sega, Big Red Button, and Sanzaru revealed in a New York press event the latest installment in the Sonic franchise, Sonic Boom. Players will be able to take control over Sonic and his traditional crew of characters: Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, as they explore an ancient land never seen before. Much like other games in the series, each one will have their own unique set of skills and attributes, such as Amy Rose with her Piko Piko Hammer weapon or Knuckles with his new found physicality. Using their abilities together as a team, players will need to work together to traverse the lush, but mysterious land presented to them.

Want a Remake of a Classic Co-Op Game? Tell Sega!John Bardinelli

Speaking with Yosuke Okunari, Sega's CS Research and Development producer, Famitsu magazine discussed his remake projects that started with Dragon Force and Virtua Fighter 2 back in 2004/2005. Since then, Okunari has mastered the art of porting classic games to modern systems without murdering our fuzzy childhood memories. Sega has a handful of remakes in the pipeline, including more titles in the 3D Reproduction Project that brought us 3D Altered Beast and 3D Streets of Rage, which are eventually heading to North America and Europe, though no release date has been announced.

We all know Sonic has been about speed since his conception into gaming. His games are made to be played with his top speed always being achieved. But after we started to play the game for a bit, we soon realized weren’t receiving the same sort of satisfaction we got from older titles. We both agreed that there is still more polishing needed here before we see it as a clear contender for other Wii U titles.

The list is pretty extensive, with developer Creative Assembly putting much of their man power into making the game run as smooth as possible. Additionally, the AI issues have been one of main focuses this time around, along with other areas like multiplayer and the online campaign speed being vamped up slightly. These areas were addressed due to the string of complains since the launch of the game earlier this month.

A new group of enemies featured in the game, the Deadly Six, are (supposedly) on equal footing with Sonic the Hedgehog as a powerful unit of terror, too dangerous for even Dr. Eggman to control. Thus, we are presented with the “Deadly Six Bonus Edition”, which will include a code to redeem the “Deadly Six” DLC level, available to be played at any point during the story. The level will feature extra boss battles against enormous enemies and will award players a special “Color Power” upon completion (this power can also be obtained through the Miiverse). NiGHTs Into Dream has also inspired the stage, adding even more SEGA flair to the title. Unfortunately, this DLC doesn’t seem to be coming to the 3DS version.

Approaching World War II from a different perspective, Company of Heroes 2 tells the tale of the Soviet Union as they fought to turn the tide against the Wermacht. While the story is suspect, the core gameplay is extremely rewarding. There is a great deal of content present, with a lengthy campaign, a war theatre, and a competitive online community. Virtually everything you do counts towards your overall level, with unlockable rewards being given along the way. Co-op is also quite rewarding.

There is no denying that there is a shortage of quality RTS games in the gaming scene. Particularly ones that deal with something other than aliens in space. Company of Heroes is one such series that breaks that tradition, opting for historic tanks and a World War II setting rather than the typical sci-fi fair. The latest from Relic, Company of Heroes 2 is shaping up to be quite a solid game. Fortunately, we have all had the opportunity to play for it a bit, because the game has been in a free open beta. The best part about the beta is that your stats for multiplayer will carry over to the full version of the game.

Sega's classic sidescrolling brawler Altered Beast is getting a remake for the 3DS eShop. Well, the remake is done and the game is out in Japan, but the rest of the world can still pretend it's "in the works". 3D Altered Beast is an enhanced port of the Genesis version of the game (as opposed to the arcade version) that keeps all the classic elements in place, including werewolf transformations, some odd plot points about Zeus, hordes of winged demons and goat men to punch, and that wonderful "POWER...UP" sound effect.

If you are a fan of cooperative games (and you should be, you are visiting Co-Optimus), then chances are you have heard about Guardian Heroes HD. Originally released for the Sega Saturn, Guardian Heroes HD was the remixed version of the Treasure classic. The game is a unique and timeless beat em' up that has stood as a solid game to this day. It is a golden standard by which to measure other games in the genre. This has as much to do with the amazing graphics, music, and animations as it has to do with the underlying game mechanics. This is a thinking man's brawler, particularly on hard mode. It features experience and stat point distribution which can come into play in a large way. Best of all, it sports some very fine cooperative play both online and locally.
