MMO Co-Opportunities Volume XI: DC Universe Online

Hi folks!  My name is Andrew and I'm new to MMO games.  I'm happy and honored to give Tally a hand this month for the MMO Co-Opportunities feature.  The game of the month is DC Universe Online, or DCUO, if you're into the whole brevity thing.  This is my first swing at this, so please, don't mind me if I make it up as I go along.

I picked up DCUO on the PS3 a few days after it was released back in January.  A very good friend of mine was absolutely raving about it.  I should note that he absolutely raves about every comic book game and movie, regardless of quality.  I think he even has all of the achievements from the first Iron Man movie game. Long story short, this particular friend moved to a different state a few years ago and we hadn't been gaming together much, so I was happy to be playing something with him, even if it cost me fifteen bucks a month.

Not Pictured: My character.  Because hackers suck.

DCUO is the first MMORPG I've played since Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast, which wasn't really massively multiplayer, but it's the closest MMORPG I have on my resume.  After I created my character, a golden-metallic-skinned amazon woman clad in white spikey armor (bare mid-driff, of course), I chose my super powers.  I asked my friend, whom I'll refer to as "Joey," because that's his real name, what kind of powers he had, so we wouldn't have overlapping abilities.  I may be new to the genre, but I know that diversity is a good thing.

Now if you've played games with me you're probably familiar with my mantra, "I tank so I don't have to think," It's a good way of life.  I like to charge into battle and draw attention so someone else can actually get something done.  I do this in FPS as well, to varying degrees of failure.  Somebody else can buff or heal me, it's clobberin' time.  I chose "Fire" as my super power and "Brawler" as my fighting style.  I also picked Superman as my mentor and chose "Flight" for my movement ability.  (Your mentor determines the look of your character's Iconic Armor set.  More on that later.)  So now I'm a flying tank, which is almost as cool as a space tank (but not quite).

This complemented Joey's character nicely.  He also had the same mentor and movement method, but his power was "Nature" and his fighting style was "Archery."  So he was a healer, or as I'd like to put it, a male nurse.  This male nurse happened to look exactly like Flash Gordon's Vultan, so Joey named him, oddly enough, Vultan.  Take that, whoever owns the rights to Flash Gordon!
