In fairness, it's good that they are giving plenty of notice of the game's eventual demise; allows folks to wrap things up before this hobby-grade shooter rides off into the sunset. However, there is one particular part of the game that should have been shutdown immediately when this announcement was made. See if you can spot which one it is:

Final Update for Battleborn Dropped Last Week, Development OverJason Love

The final content update brings with it some skins themed around Gearbox's other franchise, Borderlands. Specifically, you can acquire skins to make Alani look like Maya, Caldarius gets a Maliwan makeover, El Dragón goes Psycho, ISIC turns into that loveable Claptrap, Orendi dresses up like Tiny Tina, and Rath is Zer0. There are also a number of color skins, taunts, and "finisher boosts" added.

In some ways, timing is everything when it comes to video game releases. Battleborn arrived on the scene just a few weeks prior to Blizzard's Overwatch, which ended up being a far more popular entry in the realm of colorful team-based shooters. Gearbox and publisher 2K tried to build up a dedicated fan-base for the title through a series of updates, DLC offerings, new characters, and, eventually, making it free-to-play, and while it found some traction out there, it seems like it wasn't enough to keep members of the development team on-board. Per Randy, it sounds like pretty much everyone at Gearbox is now involved on "a highly anticipated project," which is likely Borderlands 3.

If you want some cooperative options, though, you'll have to pony up some cash, either in-game currency or real-life currency. Players still need to buy the full game (either physically or digitally) in order to gain access to the Prologue and eight Story Mode missions (which also comes with the 25 core characters unlocked). Any challenges or masteries players have unlocked prior to upgrading will carry over seamlessly. If you're looking to unlock specific battleborn, gear packs, boosters, taunts/skins, loadouts/bank pages, or the pretty darn fun Story Ops, you can do it a la carte with either Platinum (premium currency) or Credits (in-game currency earned from playing).

That's a whole lot to dig into, so let's break it down piece by piece starting with Beatrix. While Beatrix is now live in the game, she's still in a short "Early Access" period where Season Pass holders will be able to play her a week before she's released to the general public. That will be on January 26th, 2017. Beatrix can be unlocked for 47,500 in-game credits or with a hero key, which is included in the Season Pass.

Once you have access to all of those characters, you'll need to try and figure out which one you like, right? Well that's where the new "Dojo" training mode comes in. Select a character and go up against some A.I. bots to get a better feeling for their abilities and Helix progression system. After you get comfortable with them, then go to town in the cooperative Story Mode, or the PvP mode, if you prefer. Both of those modes are getting some overhaul as well, like better guides in the Story Mode to fill you in on what to do next, and better Credit rewards for both.

Kid Ultra started off as a weaponless machine armed with cartoon and comics knowledge designed to entertain children. Since that's pretty much useless in a fight, Nova and Kleese outfitted him with actual weapons, transforming him from a really good makebeliever to an actual comic book style hero.

“Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion,” the first Story Operation for Battleborn , released late last week, bringing more PvE content to the game. This DLC is both the first premium as well as first PvE-focused DLC released for the game, and I think fans of the game will feel it's been worth the wait. Story Ops can be attempted with ...

The Aussie-voiced snake is mainly a "player killer" character, with his ability to cloak, poison foes, and throw down a smoke bomb to get out of hairy situations. I'm sure that some of those abilities will be beneficial in taking down larger enemies in the PvE mode, though.

According to 2K, all of the operations that will be released over the next few months will allow players to play through them over and over again as "the story, enemies, and objectives will change, increasing the difficulty but also the rewarded loot." They don't go any further into what that means exactly though if it holds up that would certainly bring some welcome replayability to the co-op side of things. Playing the operation will also be the only way to earn the new skins and taunts that are a part of each piece of DLC.

The update actually launched yesterday, so if you've ducked your head into the game since then you've already noticed this addition. The in-game marketplace will let you buy "Platinum" using your real-world money. That Platinum, in turn, can be spent to buy new skins for all 26 of the game's characters, and taunts for a smaller subset (Ghalt, Oscar Mike, Benedict, Shayne & Aurox, El Dragon, Whiskey Foxtrot, Kleese, and Alani). More taunts for other characters will be added as time goes on, along with the ability to buy the DLC packs (whenever they get released).
