First Big Update for Breach Drops Today Along With The PriceJason Love

If you've already picked up the Founder's Pack, then you'll be getting 3,000 QC Points, the premium currency, as the developer's way of saying "thank you." That's enough to pick up a 30-day XP & Gold boost (1,000 points) plus a few Hero characters (which run about 300 QC Points each), which means you'll be able to acquire the new Medic Hero class. Instead of the Founder's Pack, the new Early Access Pass will get you into the game now (it'll be free-to-play, eventually), which will get you an initial Hero character, along with 2,000 QC Points and a 30-day XP/Gold boost. At $10, that's not a bad new asking price.

The general consensus amongst Nick, Locke, Mike, and myself is that we all really like Breach and what it's doing, but it's very much a "wait and see" scenario. The overall gameplay is solid and it's going to be interesting to see the kinds of class hybrids people devise. Playing with a group of friends to clear a dungeon feels satisfying, particularly when you have those moments where you just manage to pull through. Most matches only last between 15 to 20 minutes, too, so it's easy enough to hop into one or two when you don't have a lot of time to play and, win or lose, you'll have some loot, in-game currency, and character progression to show for it.

The last time I had a chance to check out Breach with a couple of the developers, the focus was largely around the gameplay aspects and how it looks and feels. This time, Gabe walked us through some of the mythological (and extraterrestrial) inspirations for the enemies, and what their vision is for the game down-the-line.

Your main foe in Breach is the Veil Demon, an opponent that can either be controlled by the game's A.I. or by another human (if you've got a fifth friend that's really into griefing). Every room in the dungeon has a goal that the group of players will try to complete while the Veil Demon will do its best to thwart them. Whoever wins will get a boost that will help them with the next encounter/room and, ultimately, the final room that contains the dungeon's boss. There's loot, character progression, and more - win or lose - so you'll have plenty of reason to keep coming back for more.

I got a bit of a guided demo with Breach last month when a couple of the devs took me through the title while I chatted with them about it. While my playtime was limited to about an hour, that was more than enough time for the game to get its hooks into me. The blending of elements and mechanics from different genres all feels very natural, and there's a clear emphasis on teamwork and cooperation to clear the dungeons.

Initially, Breach appears to be a fairly straightforward action RPG with some lite MMO touches. Choose your class from a variety of melee/ranged/support templates, customize the appearance of your character, then hop into an initial gathering hub. After I played through my first match, though, it became clear that QC Games' ambitions for Breach go far beyond what is "the usual." They have blended elements from a variety of games (Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter, Heroes of the StormEvolve) and genres into a new format that feels both familiar yet wholly unique.
