It plays a bit like an Action/RPG in the same vein as Diablo 3, but with a limited roster of 14 DOTA 2 characters to use. You'll build a party of four, head out into a large map, and take on various quests with progress saved at various checkpoints. Players have limited lives which can be augmented by reaching a checkpoint.

Co-Op Campaign Being Added to DOTA 2 via The International Battle PassJason Love

While Valve has offered some different co-op modes in the past for DOTA 2, this is the first time they've gone for, from the sound of it, something that's a little more story-based. Played across two parts, the first of which arrives sometime this month and the second in July, the "Siltbreaker" campaign will allow up to three players to team up online to "battle through a diverse landscape of loathsome monsters, cunning traps, and other lethal terrors." Each time you play the campaign, you'll earn campaign XP, which you can accumulate to earn some spins of the "Wheel of Rewards" (better than a "Wheel of Fish") with a chance to win the "extremely rare" courier, Desert Baby Roshan.

Each wave of enemy yields more difficult and larger mobs trying to kill you. There's also a subset of character to choose from who's abilities have been tweaked to better suit the nature of the mode.

Captain's Draft is one of the new modes designed for versus play which gives teams some strategy while picking characters from a pool of 24. Each team takes turns banning two of the available heroes from the match while picking and counter-picking to compose their lineup. GlaDOS has also been added to the game as an announcer thanks to the "Portal Pack." The pack will set you back $18 but it's on sale for $14.39. Included in it are the GlaDOS voice set, Portal UI skin, and Aperture Science Wardcores.

For the past several weeks, I’ve been dabbling in Dota 2. It’s one of those RTS/action games where you take control of a hero unit and defend your base from the opposing team. Though the focus of these games is usually competitive, Dota 2 supports a pretty good co-op mode (probably the best I’ve seen for the genre). Any number of players can form up on a team, fill up the remaining slots with bots, and go up against an all-bot team in good, old-fashioned comp-stomp. The bots are available in five different difficulty levels, so it’s easy to tweak the experience based on whether the players are new to the game or experienced. Of late, I’ve found the co-op mode a great way to blow off some steam.
