You can check out our previous stream recap for a little more in-depth explanation of the various game mechanics, not much has changed since then. You're still taking on procedurally generated missions in a fixed area and you're still doing your best to avoid being detected as you complete various objectives. As you complete missions, regardless if you win or lose, you'll earn experience and level up your character. New levels will earn you ability points that can be spent on major and minor powers, and open up new areas of the map to explore (which also makes missions harder and nets you more experience). If you get captured by one of the human foes, you can try to fight them off before you get turned, and if you're taken by "The Shape," then you'll have to have a buddy revive you.

The Blackout Club Launches Next MonthJason Love

We spent a little time last Fall playing the title in its new Early Access state and came away impressed. The main gameplay focus is to sneak around an area and accomplish some objective while avoiding being caught by adults that are under the influence of a mysterious "boogeyman," called Angel. Avoiding the adults is easy, the tough (and scary) part comes when Angel steps onto the field and you cannot see him/it unless you close your eyes. The idea of "horror" in a co-op game can be tough to pull off as you'll always have some buddy in your ear saying something that sucks all the scare out of a moment, but The Blackout Club does a really great job of ramping up that tension and anxiety so it's felt by everyone.

The setup to The Blackout Club is that there are strange things happening in your home town. People walk around at night with no recollection of doing so except for a handful of teens that wake up in the middle of these "blackout" periods. They form a club to figure out what's going on and bring light to these mysteries, and have greater motivation to do so once one of their friends gets taken by an invisible boogeyman called "The Shape." It all feels like a mix of ideas and themes from movies and TV shows like Goonies and Stranger Things, and gameplay from Amnesia and Thief. Even more surprising than that blend of media is that it all works.

We hadn't heard much from the developer, Question, since The Blackout Club was first teased earlier this year, but the former Bioshock and Dishonored devs have now been kind enough to show off some footage of the game to get us all spooked before its 2019 release.  Just be aware, though, that everything is still in a very early state.

There are some interesting ideas at play here. Your main goal isn't take out the evil forces through violent means, but rather to capture their actions on your cell phone camera. You can use diversions to distract them and lure them to different places, or use traps to save yourself from getting caught. The devs have intentionally created this power disparity between the heroes (teens) and antagonists (adults) in order to lend more tension to the proceedings, but also to reinforce the cooperative elements by having players work together to outmaneuver and outwit the enemies.
