Version 2.0 of Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor - Martyr Is on the WayJason Love

This update was first teased a few months ago when the latest season - "Khorne" - kicked off and was dubbed "Touch of the Omnissiah." You can check out a breakdown of some of the features that will be coming with this update over on the official website, but here are a few of the outstanding ones:

The Warzone mode is, essentially, the cap to the end of what Neocore is defining as a "season" in the game, as they detailed in a post last month. The new season will kick-off sometime later and introduce, among other things, a new enemy faction (the Dark Eldar), new gear, and a new level cap. As for the Warzone itself, the mode introduces five narrative stages that have their own storyline, which plays out across 10 battles (levels). Each battle challenges players with fighting off hordes of foes within the confines of individual rooms. Battles will also have modifiers ("hazards") that will change up the way you approach each one. For instance, in one battle, enemies may leave pools of acid when they die, or spawn a demon. These will be cumulative up to the final battle after which players will be able to tackle the "Endless" mode where they can set their own hazards and try to challenge themselves for better gear and for "Favours," which can be collected to take on a special "Nemesis" boss that, naturally, will have the best gear drops. Oh, and in case you were worried, you'll be able to play through all of it with up to three other players online.

While it's disappointing that the campaign is restricted to single-player only, there's still a lot of opportunities to enjoy some cooperative gameplay and fight the forces of Chaos with your friends. In fact, outside of those campaign missions that also double as a tutorial for all the different features and systems in Inquisitor - Martyr, all other missions can be completed with up to three other players online. This includes the custom missions you can create using "Uther's Tarot" (though it's worth noting all players need to have enough FATE [in-game currency] to to join), and the special assignment missions that are multi-step with choices to make along the way (only the host player can make choices, but they can narrate and let others vote on what to do). Players also have three different classes - Crusader, Assassin, and Psyker - from which to choose, and different specializations (ranged or melee) within those classes.

As a quick refresher on what this game is, it's an action-RPG title in the Diablo 3 vein where players will be able to choose a character class, level up and spend skill points in a skill tree, and kill foes to get loot. In its own unique spin, though, Inquisitor - Martyr goes beyond just that. Within the game, players are part of a group (the Inquisitors) that are tasked with rooting out Chaotic corruption and eliminating it with extreme prejudice. So while there are straightforward missions to complete (kill X enemies, or destroy these key things), there are also larger Investigations in which players can partake that will chain together several missions in mini-story arcs. There will also be seasons where all players contribute in some way to what happens within the sector.

There are a lot of different systems at play in Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr. In addition to the usual click and loot you find in many Diablo-style aRPGs, Martyr also has a crafting system, a way to generate your own mission using a special currency earned by completing daily quests, a "power level" that affects how easy or difficult a given mission may be, and an even larger concept of completing certain missions or taking certain actions will impact the overall field of play. The biggest problem, so far, is that pieces and components of those things are partially implemented, and none of them are linked up in a meaningful way that makes sense when you fist jump into the game. There's definitely some cool ideas and things going on in Martyr and we're looking forward to see how they develop, but for now, if you're interested in checking out, do know that it's in Alpha and there are some rough edges.

While there are single-player only campaign missions, the much grander Inquisitorial Campaign allows up to four players to team up to tackle a variety of missions. Within those missions, you'll be doing the usual clicking and looting that you find in Diablo and the like, but you'll also have specific objectives to complete. Some of those missions may even lead to new missions that are part of a "Grand Investigations." There's a lot of underlying mechanics at play here and I like the sound of it for a Warhammer 40,000 game, I'm just hoping that it all works out as intended.

A consistent theme throughout 40k's lore is the constant warring waged by the various factions for control of star systems, one planet at a time. Necocore is trying to bring some of that idea into the "open world sandbox" that is the Caligari Sector of WH40k: Inquisitor - Martyr. Players will initially be given access to one subsector of Caligari where they will be able to pursue randomly generated missions in order to influence the corruption level of that subsector. Some of these missions may lead you to other quests to provide a kind of mini-campaign experience. These missions are cooperative as opposed to the preset single-player campaign. Neocore also plans on setting up "seasons" within the game that are free and task players with pursuing certain goals.

In their latest developer blog post, Lead Gameplay Programmer György Flórea explains how he worked to make the enemies smart enough to find the correct path in a dynamic environment, but also dumb enough to not react precisely when things change.

Inquisitor - Martyr's gameplay will be action-RPG focused and it appears it will also incorporate some of the "base of operations" ideas seen in Neocore's previous titles. The campaign itself is split a little. There's the single-player campaign that will focus on exploring and uncovering the secret of an abandoned fortress-monastery, the Martyr, and there's the "Inquisitorial Campaign," or the open-world map that will have a variety of missions to undertake. Some of those missions will allow up to four players to play together.
