Samoza's Co-op Achievement Methods (SCAMs) - Dead Rising 2

These images clearly show how to get 80Gs

I will the first person to admit that I had my issues with Dead Rising 2, but despite the dodgy save function and the constant loading, the game was still fun when played in co-op.  There are surprisingly few co-op specific achievements available in the game, but this should not stop you working together to get some of the others.

The Basics

Dead Rising 2 is as about as generous as Scrooge, pre-three ghosts, when it comes to basic achievements for simply playing the game.  If you complete the original days, successfully achieve all the tasks and tackle the final overtime you will get the mind blowing amount of 40Gs.  That is a lot of work for little reward.  To compound the issue you should get a further 20Gs for completing the game with a co-op pal, but this will need to be done in one massive session as the constant saving and kicking means the game suspects you have not played co-op throughout.  Getting 60Gs for completing the game in co-op will be no easy task!

Maskerade – 20G

After the frustration of trying to get the story based achievements the game really shines when you  stuff the narrative and have some co-op fun.  One achievement that is easier as a twosome is ‘Maskerade’ which requires you to place 10 masks on 10 separate zombies at once.

After you both exit the safe house into the Mall area head left to a large open space with escalators leading up.  Stop!  Rather than head up the stairs, go into the toy shop hidden behind one of the escalators.  Just inside the door is a box full of an infinite number of dinosaur masks.  Both of you can go mask crazy putting as many of the Dino Visages on the undead horde.  It’s so much easier in co-op because on your own you can easily find yourself surrounded by the living dead and being killed before you can cover 10 zombies.

Such artistry takes years to master - behold

Don’t you die on me - 20G

Here is the current situation. You have both been playing for a few hours and are struggling to get the story achievements.  How about a nice easy co-op achievement to calm you down?  Just revive one another!  When your pal is down you must equip a food item from your inventory and stand over them.  When prompted just press the button to heal them.  Friend won’t fall?  Then why not give them a helping hand by shooting them repeatedly, or hitting them over the head with a giant teddy bear?  What are friends for, other than to sacrifice their own well being just so you can increase a meaningless achievement score?

Judge, Jury and Executioner – 40G

This is another achievement that is not strictly co-op, but is so much easier with two players.  Throughout the game you come across bosses and mini bosses who are collectively known as psychopaths.  You must kill 5 of them to get 20Gs and a further 5 for 20Gs more – a total of 40Gs.  The main campaign story has enough psychopaths for you to get the 5 kills achievement, but to get 10 you will need to hunt these tougher enemies down.  The various mentalists appear during the side missions that you can opt into.  The problem is that some of these enemies are very hard.

This is where true cooperation comes into its own.  Firstly, both players should be prepared by making some top weaponry, the spiked bat and spiked gloves can be made up from items found near the safe house maintenance room at the start of the game.  Also make sure you both have enough food items to heal yourself and your partner.  With both players laden down you can set off on a psycho hunt.  Most mini bosses can be defeated if you work well together; one player draws the attention, whilst the other hits their back and vice versa until death ensues.

Another important co-op decision to make is communicating when its time to run!  Some of the psychopaths are very tough, even if you are both at a high experience level.  You may be better off leaving them for a later playthrough, just don’t leave you friend to die alone.

If I was given £1 for every time someone said my art was brilliant. I would have no money.

Tape it, or die – 20G

This is the game’s only secret achievement and once you know it, it is easy to get.  Both you and your co-op partner will receive the Gs even if only one of you undertakes the task.  This next part is the secret bit ….

Simply combine the following – two separate orange juices to make some nectar (this can be done using a drinks mixer in numerous bars and restaurants in the game).  Once you have the nectar, visit a maintenance room and combine it with a Queen Bee (they are left behind by random zombies).  Voila!  20Gs easily unlocked for both players.

Custom Finish – 20G

Another achievement that is best done together is Custom Finish which has the suspiciously easy task of repainting your motorbike.  The only problem is that to unlock your bike you need to kill off the chainsaw wielding, bike riding, psycho nutter, Leon (not a scary name).  He can be drawn out early in the game during the side mission ‘Meet the Contestants’, but be warned as he is hard to kill.  You will probably need two of you to stand a chance and you best both be at a decent level.

Once Leon rides out, use the tactic of drawing his attention and attacking him as seen in ‘Judge, Jury and Executioner’.  If you are clever you can get him trapped in a corner and pound him like a pair of deranged Chucks.  Once he dies his van unlocks and inside you find a bike that you can customize and drive around the central area of the game map.  Now for the achievement itself, simply equip a can of spray paint, which can be found in many shops, and spray the bike a different color.  You can then let your co-op partner do the same (make sure they have picked up a different paint color) and you have a co-op achievement!

There are plenty of other achievements to be gained in Dead Rising 2 in terms of both solo and co-op game.  I have just highlighted some of the more entertaining achievements that can be gained with a little ‘constructive’ thinking (cheating).

Have you any tales of amusing achievement gathering in Dead Rising 2?
