For me, the star player in that line-up is Assault Android Cactus. In the realm of twin-stick shooters, it is absolutely a stand-out title. It is friendly enough that players of all familiarity levels can hop in and have fun, but there is such an intriguing depth. Seriously, look up some competitive/high score play to see just how crazy it can get. So if you like twin-stick shooters and want a great couch co-op game, definitely pick up Assault Android Cactus.

Assault Android Cactus Makes Its Way to Xbox One Next MonthJason Love

To this day, the one twin-stick shooter I still occasionally go back to and play again is Witch Beam's Assault Android Cactus. There is so much depth to the gameplay that every time I pick it up, I feel like I learn something new; and playing through it with a buddy (or three) makes it even better. So, head's up Xbox One owners, it'...

It's more of the Cactus you (and us, if our review is any indication) love, but for Sony's shiny current gen platform. You and three friends can team up to take on the forces of Robot Evil to collect battery packs so you don't die. It's kind of like the Streets of Rage equivalent of punching bad guys until turkeys fall out of them, but for robots.

Here's a quick breakdown of both titles. Assault Android Cactus is a fantastic twin-stick shooter where you and up to three of your friends (locally) control robots to fight your way through a ship that's been taken over by a rogue A.I. Each character has her own unique primary and alternate weapons, and teaming up with friends allows for a lot of crazy combinations. Something new for the PlayStation 4 version of the game is that it will support the Shareplay feature, meaning you can pull in a remote friend to take over one of the local co-op spots for an hour at a time.

The words “twin-stick shooter” have become far too common a descriptor for games these days and it feels, at times, like the gamut of possibilities for what types of things you can shoot using two joysticks on a controller has now reached its exhaustive conclusion. Then you play a game like Assault Android Cactus and remember why t...

While the title has been in the Steam Early Access program for some time now, Assault Android Cactus will see a full release some time this summer on Playstation 4, PS Vita, and the Wii U. The developers of the game, indie developer Witch Beam, stated that they were inspired by "classic arcade shoot 'em ups" and an art style evocative of the "colorful visuals of the Dreamcast era". Looking at the game in action, I'd say they hit those targets.

As one of eight androids, you must battle an army of robots that have taken control of a space freighter. Through the 25 level campaign, you’ll encounter a manic display of robots with varying attacks and abilities. The environments are also dynamic, with the floors in some levels constantly changing as you attack your enemies. From the trailer it’s clear that Assault Android Cactus is a fast-paced wall-to-wall action shooter, as the screen is constantly filled with an array of projectiles you won’t have time to plan out your every move. The pure spontaneity is something that not many twin stick shooters offer.
