Ahh, the shadow drop. What better way is there to build instant hype than to release a game that nobody was expecting, right here, right now? That's exactly what Square Enix has done today with Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-. The original Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon was released on Super Famicom in Japan way back in 1993. Although the PSOne sequel did get an English version, today's release is the first official English version of the original game.
Official description:Notable for kicking off the roguelike genre in Japan, Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is an endlessly replayable adventure as players dive into dangerous, constantly changing dungeons to find and escape with treasure to help grow Torneko’s shop.
While in the dungeons, every action Torneko takes – whether moving, attacking or using an item – gives the monsters a chance to attack as well. By defeating monsters, players earn experience points to level up Torneko and grow stronger.
What's more, the Steam version of the game offers a free "Streaming Up a Storm: My Dungeon, Your Rules" DLC. The DLC adds Twitch integration, allowing viewers to vote on the outcome of a random event on each floor. That should make for an interesting live roguelike experience!
It's very cool of Square Enix to make another classic Dragon Quest game available to English audiences, and on all current-gen platforms! Let's hope that more games will follow, such as Dragon Quest 4-6, Dragon Quest IX (which has co-op), and Dragon Quest X Offline!
In the meantime, a free demo of the upcoming DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World was just released on all platforms, so fans have plenty to keep them busy this week. The Withered World will cost $59.99 when it arrives on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Steam on December 2 of this year.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- sells for $24.99 on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Steam.
