There is a lot of debate within the Minecraft community about the best way to play the game. Some would argue that creative mode is the perfect Minecraft experience. The creative freedom it offers players is hugely attractive. While others argue that survival mode is how the developers intended the game to be played. Both of these modes have their merits. But these modes aren’t the only way to play Minecraft. And I am here to argue that they aren’t even the best way of playing. Instead I invite you to join me as I guide you through one of the best Minecraft custom game modes ever created. Skyblock!
The Skyblock Experience
So what is Skyblock? And why is it the ultimate Minecraft experience? Skyblock is a custom survival game mode created many years ago by a player who goes by the name Noobcrew. Although it is often wrongly attributed to the Hypixel network.
Skyblock quickly rose to prominence within the Minecraft community. Many of the most popular YouTubers, like Captainsparklez and PewDiePie, created Let’s Play videos of Skyblock. This quickly made the game mode one of the most popular out there. And its popularity has not weakened over the years either.
Skyblock mode is similar to the famous One Block mode. But instead of starting on a singular block you spawn on a small floating island. And, unlike in One Block mode, none of the blocks on this island regenerate infinitely. Meaning your starting resources are limited. The entire map is made up of floating islands of various sizes and biomes. You need to use all your creative ingenuity and guile to find a way to reach these islands.
Skyblock Servers
Skyblock can be played as a completely single player experience. But, like most Minecraft game modes, it is vastly improved when played multiplayer. Luckily Skyblock servers are still some of the most popular out there. Any Minecraft server site will have an abundant list of skyblock servers for you to choose from. Many Skyblock servers utilize different mods to enhance the experience. Mods like Airships, Advanced Islands, Flying Carpets, and the Aether. If you don’t want to play with mods you should double check the servers description before joining.
Skyblock is a completely new game when played multiplayer. You can decide whether to work together with your fellow players, or to work against each other. Some of my most tense gaming moments on Minecraft have come from racing my friends to various sky islands in Skyblock.
The Basics Of Skyblock
The premise of Skyblock is fairly simple. But actually mastering the game is rather more complex. Many newer players fail to escape their starting island in their first playthrough. Because they often approach it as just another survival mode. Luckily for you I have spent years mastering Skyblock and I am going to share some of my hard earned tips with you.
When you first start up a new Skyblock map you will find yourself on a small island with a singular tree and a treasure chest. You should take some time to familiarize yourself with the items in the chest. Depending on which version of Skyblock you are playing on the items might change. But most versions will give you a bucket or water and lava. We will touch on these more later.
One of the key elements to succeeding in Skyblock is farming. Primarily you need to be growing new trees using the saplings you harvest from your original tree. Make sure none of the saplings fall off the island into the void below. Starting a tree farm is essential for making your basic tools and crafting table.
Advanced Skyblock Tactics
These buckets are essential in creating what is known as a cobblestone generator. When lava comes into contact with water it turns into a cobblestone block. With some clever designing you can build a system that allows you to receive infinite amounts of cobblestone. Be warned! You need to make sure you never let the primary water or lava block get destroyed.
Many versions of Skyblock will also start you off with some obsidian. This is meant to be used to help you access the Nether. In Skyblock the Nether will be a huge help as it gives you access to a lot more blocks which you can bring back into the normal world. My advice is try to build your bridge off your starting island using blocks you have harvested from the nether. This frees up your wood for creating tools and a farm.
The most important piece of advice I can give you is to not give up. Skyblock can be frustrating at times. But if you push yourself you’ll find it insanely satisfying when all the pieces of your plan finally come together.
