Did anyone download Achilles: Legends Untold back in May 2022 and end up saying: “huh, well that was underwhelming…”?
There’s a very good reason for that. Due to the simultaneous release of the game on PC and consoles, there had to be a postponement of the full version for PC, which has given Dark Point Games time to add more variety and more enriching, immersive content. The title is set to be released in full in late 2023.
So don’t slam your keyboard down in anger just yet – although, admittedly, this was over a year ago, so you may have already done that. The good news is, there’s plenty you can do to ramp up that excitement again.
After all, Achilles: Legends Untold is obviously not the first game to have mythological themes infused into the content. With Gods like Zeus, demons like Cerberus (in God of War), and monsters like Medusa, Chimera and Hydra, there’s certainly plenty of content for game developers to feast on.
And feast on it they have! Here are our top 5 games with mythological themes that are masters of their genre, and will certainly whet your appetite in the lead up to Achilles: Legends Untold:
Olympus Rising: Hero Defence
Olympus Rising: Hero Defence came out only two years ago, but it feels like it’s been with us forever, such is the imprint it has left in the mobile game genre. This is clear-cut entertainment with a mythological theme that easily brings the game alive – even on a 6.1-inch phone!
With its simplified controls and objectives, at times it feels more like a casino game. You can even find similar titles created specifically for online casinos that contain a mythological twist or theme. And that’s a good thing. Oftentimes, games like this are easier to get the hang of, clearer in their objectives, and – because they exist on your mobile – far more convenient to actually play and enjoy!
Assassins Creed: Odyssey
Moving onto consoles, Assassins Creed: Odyssey was the first Assassin's Creed game to venture into the vast world of Ancient Greece, and it’s fair to say that the change in surroundings succeeded. Sure, Odyssey might not be as easy to play as Olympus Rising, but the incredible graphics and gameplay make up for that in spades.
To this day, it remains one of the most beloved AC instalments, perhaps even more so than Assassin's Creed II – although we know that’s sacrilege to say, and there’s probably assassins on the hunt for us right now just for saying it. But hey, it’s true!
God Of War
Okay, okay, so this isn’t technically Greek mythology, but it is in the same realm in which the Ancient Greek world existed, and much of the game includes Scandinavian mythological themes, including famous monsters like Fenrir, Hel-Walkers, Ogres and even the Minotaur.
If we’re talking about a story, then God Of War simply cannot be beaten. From the moment you hit “play” to the moment you put down the controller, curl up into a ball and cry, it is a thrill-ride of emotions that just keeps on giving.
Titan Quest
The year is 2006 and the Winter Olympics are being held in Italy, Twitter has just been founded and it’s almost two decades away from its current struggles under Musk, and people are going frantic after Zidane headbutted Materazzi in the World Cup Final. Also, on the side-lines, Titan Quest is released, and gamers have gone into a meltdown.
To this day, Titan Quest is a masterclass of what you can do with passionate game developers and a concrete story. Even today, thousands of players still play this action RPG, still enjoying the incredible character progression, armour and weapon upgrades, among countless other fun features. We’re gonna say it: this game really is as timeless as Ancient Greece.
Total War Saga: Troy
Yes, yes, we were all a little disappointed that we didn’t get to play as Brad Pitt in this game. But it was still the perfect strategy video game, full of unique stories, a fun blend of myth and history, and an atmosphere that made it impossible not to immerse yourself in the world completely.
This is really the kind of game that Achilles: Legends Untold is having to compete with. Do you think it can do it? Well, we’re all just going to have to wait a few more months to find out. Apart from those who broke their keyboards. They’re going to have to pop to eBay first.
