Unless you were playing the Sega Saturn and a gamer of the 90s, you may not be all that aware of the Golden Axe franchise.

However, for many gamers of that generation, it was an iconic series and one that provided plenty of entertainment for those who were able to enjoy it. Described as being side-scrolling beat 'em up arcade video games, it had arrived as this type of format had started to explode across the arcade gaming sector.

Sega announced last year that they would be looking to potentially revive many of their old catalogue, with the series being among those that could receive the treatment.

Fans have become desperate for it

Gamers of the current generation did manage to start to experience what those did almost as long as forty years ago got to experience; however it was incredibly underwhelming. The 2008 release of Golden Axe: Beast Rider is one that has been largely criticized by those who rank games.

It was slated in reviews for being soulless and featured a lack of design. It didn’t feature anything different, keeping the mind-numbing mechanics of the 2D version but providing it with a 3D facelift.

Given the underwhelming nature of this title, it’s led to many desperate to see the franchise be restored to its former glory. They want the game series to be given the makeover that it deserves and be representative of the type of experiences that were obtained when it was forest released in 1989 and the subsequent versions that were enjoyed throughout the 1990s.

New release has been touted

As mentioned, there has been a new release touted in the past. An article in 2023 revealed that Sega had released artwork related to the game.

Indeed, the graphics that could be found in the original could still be used in many different guises due to the nostalgia boost that New Zealand Daily readers may crave when playing games. For example, it wouldn’t seem out of place if it were to be turned into a slot game and receive the same treatment that Capcom’s Street Fighter II had. This proved to be an instant hit in the industry with players, and there is every chance that Golden Axe could receive the same reception.

However, the rumors regarding the game’s artwork suggest that something new could be about to arrive, which could upset those who are desperate for a new release. While updates to the visuals are always welcomed, it would seem that designers may have gone overboard with this version, as they are said to look a little “World of Warcraft-ish” in terms of how the characters look. This could take away from the game’s appeal and make it seem like something that is very different to the original franchise.

Not much else is known about what a new Golden Axe title could feature, which could potentially leave fans of the series on edge, especially after the perceived flop that was experienced the last time a new title was released.
