Emulators are Saving Older Cooperative Games from Extinction

Emulators simulate graphics, sound, memory, and the CPU of the original hardware, which allows software to run without any of the original components being needed. This is great for the gaming world because as the years go by, tech evolves, and new hardware hits the market. Games are usually attached to a specific platform, and if that platform gets discontinued, the games usually fade out with it. Emulators, however, allow people to play older titles, as they preserve them in the digital world.

87% of Classic Titles are Considered Critically Endangered

Emulators play a huge role in protecting older cooperative games from being lost in time. As 87% of classic games are unavailable to purchase or critically endangered, emulators essentially act as a museum to preserve access while ensuring that generations to come can still access the classics that set the foundation for the games we love today.

Emulators also include features that are not often present in original games, like the ability to save states, patches that can be applied to multiplayer modes, and even improved graphics. This not only preserves the original state of the game, but it also makes older games much more accessible. With 9 out of 10 classic games that were developed prior to 2010 no longer in development in the US, emulators serve as a powerful way to make sure that titles can still be played to this day. This is a very important movement for the cooperative gaming world as well, as many of the titles that are now endangered set the foundation for modern-day cloud gaming by introducing features that were groundbreaking for their time.

To put into perspective how essential emulators are, imagine if the only way you could watch Top Gun was to find a VHS tape, maintain your vintage VHS player, and use an old TV that supported a 21-pin SCART connection. There simply wouldn’t be any way to do this while preserving the experience, but sites like Netflix UK have old movies on their platform, meaning they can still be accessed with ease, which preserves content for years to come.

Digital Preservation and Connective Experiences

It’s not just games and movies that are benefiting from digital preservation. Many classic books are now available in an eBook format, meaning we can still read books from hundreds of years ago, even if the original copies are no longer in print.

Podcasts are also expanding the storytelling format, creating entirely new forms of digital media on niche subjects with instant global accessibility. Another example would be traditional slot games. If the games were limited to physical machines, games would fade out over time, to make way for new and interesting formats. Now, slot games on UK websites and platforms offer hundreds of titles, ranging from King Kong Splash to Fire Stampede Ultimate. Titles like this push the boundaries by adding new features, but at the same time, platforms preserve classic fruit slots in a digital format.

With cooperative games now coming back with a huge resurgence, it’s clear that emulators have a key part to play in preserving the historic value of classic titles, while reminding us of how far we have come.
