Discuss This Game

4 out of 5

Rating: 4.1/5 (59 votes cast)

Number of Players: 4 players are available for co-op play in this game. This is the highest maximum number available for a specific mode. See chart for details.

Online Co-Op: Co-Op Play is available over the internet or an online service like Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. Each player needs their own system, game, and internet connection.

Couch Co-Op: Couch or Local Co-Op allows players to use one copy of the game with multiple controllers to play co-op. This includes both split screen play and same screen play. Couches are not required.

SplitScreen: The TV is split into multiple screens so each co-op player gets their own viewpoint. The screen could be split vertically or horizontally.

LAN or Systemlink: Co-Op Play is available over a Local Network or System Link Connection. Most likely a router will be required, but you may use a crossover cable in some cases.

The Co-Op Experience: The co-op campaign allows players to rank up and unlock perks in competitive multiplayer by completing challenges and earning experience points, adding continuous re-playability and team-based gameplay.

After completing single player you unlock a 4 player survival mode with Nazi zombies. Players are required to hold a structure by buying weapons, ammo, and fortifying the structure. This mode is playable in 2 player split screen as well as online.

Note: You are unable to save progress while playing in Split Screen co-op.

One step in the right direction. I used to take issue when a game didn't have split screen but for you hard core co-op players it really doesn't get any better than system link. It bugs the hell out of me when games only have Live support (mercs2,ace combat, too human) so this game and Left for Dead get props for having more than the norm of 2 max player system link co-op content. The only bummer about this game is that it is too short and you miss some of the missions that are 1 person specific in the game.

The game can be played co-op with 4 players via system link I promise, You do not have to be on Live.

The fact that they advertise this game as this great multiplayer game makes me sick to my stomach, my wife and i were trying to figure out how we can both go online ,after finding out that you can't i became furious !!!The whole reason why i brought that game is so that me and her can play another shotting game where u can level up and play against other people together. it just pisses me off to no end how you cant play with 2 xbox live accounts at the same time. im getting tired of playin Halo 3,and i thought that this would have ben a good game to switch to but obviously not. they need to figure out how to do that, and quick b cuz thats what really makes it an online game, to me at least

Good game but the lack of online split-screen leaves a very sour taste in my mouth especially since the Nazi Zombie mode is so fun.

Solid game if you are a fan of the COD games, it basically follows the same formula as COD 4 and uses the same engine only with a WW2 backdrop versus the Modern day one.

The game looks just as good as COD 4 and the sounds are amazing, however there are some downsides to it.

1. Playing co-op does not save your progress and will not unlock new levels

2. The splitscreen setup is a little funky be prepared to get use to it if you want to play couch co-op

3.The online community is very lame, unless you are playing in a private party with friends I don't recommend having your headset plugged in.

Other than that this is a decent game to pick up if you are a fan of the series, and the zombie mode you open up after beating the campaign is a very nice bonus.

Overall I give this game a 8.5 out of 10.

I would not have even bought this game if it were not for the co-op capabilities, I was extremely disappointed to learn that you cannot save your progress in co-op mode.

Hopefully Infinity Ward will improve upon co-op play and include true co-op campaign in COD:MW2.

dont know how to figure out the system link for waw it wont let any one join
by: Anonymous on 01.04.2009
I don't understand why you cant save during coop play? It takes forever to get it done. But it is a good game.
by: Anonymous on 01.04.2009
way better than cod4. still sucks that you can't split screen online though.
by: Anonymous on 01.02.2009
it has its ups, but surely more downs. In the sense of we the consumer thought it would be similar to cod5...it is in some ways, but you fooled us into thinking it would be a good game. Where is Infinity Ward?? Hopefully making COD6 Future warfare!!
by: Anonymous on 01.02.2009
it is so retarded that the game doesn't allow 2 players on the same console to play online or let two players do a system link to 2 other players. very frustrating and annoying. huge game flew by the creators or dumbest decision ever. makes this game very disappointing

game is awesome!
by: Anonymous on 12.25.2008
Overall the game does look & play nice so far for us. But we just found out we can't save progress while doing coop. Unbelievable. You want to be able to save & continu later.
by: Anonymous on 12.24.2008
As JasonSuave said, the coop is poorly implemented. What is the point of having split screen if its only two player max. If four people wanted to play you would think two xboxes would be enough. Two on each xbox. But no, system link does not support splitscreen. Not only that, but only half of the campaign is playable in coop. Oh, and all the achievements have to be unlocked in solo.

Compared to CoD4 world at war owns it.

- Nazi Wars
- Co-Op!
- Newer guns + perks
I could go on for ever...

^^ That's the reason why CoD5 is better!

this game is beast mode its badass
by: Anonymous on 12.21.2008
I hate that you can't save the game on co-op all that work for nothing!!!!
by: Anonymous on 12.20.2008
I game for co-op and online multiplayer... It's really disappointing that you can't save any of your progress on co-op, and you can't play more then one person on a console in the online multiplayer.
It's pretty sad that Bungie is the only ones who can figure that out.
Anyway, not a big fan!
by: Anonymous on 12.10.2008
Why doesn't this site actually give you the details.

Tell us

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN PLAY CO-OP IN TOTAL FOR EACH GAME MODE
HOW MANY CAN PLAY PER CONSOLE WITH SYSTEM LINK
HOW MANY CAN PLAY SPLITSCREEN IF ONLY ONE CONSOLE

This game is incomplete, and its multiplayer functionality in terms of player support is a decade behind. This is the 7th Call of duty game, why the F can't they give us what we had in Perfect Dark back on the N64?!?!?!?!

this game is bad cod4 is better
by: Anonymous on 12.06.2008
The most disappointing feature of the splitscreen co-op is no saves. Unlike the single player where you can save progress and leave, the split screen co-op only unlocks the first mission and has no save options. So, to co-op other levels beyond what you are willing to play thru at one sitting, you have to "open them up" in single player...which kind of defeats the fun of discovering the levels together in co-op play.

Skip this if you are a fan of co-op.

I was HIGHLY disapointed when my brother and I began playing the game, got through half of it, and then realized the only options were to continue or quit.

Ignorance.

Agreed, why can't COD simply allow 2 players online in split screen mode on a single console. Geez! Get it right for once. I refuse to upgrade to this version or any future version of this game until they include this.
by: Anonymous on 11.21.2008
Yes, the split-screen play is very disappointing... If Bungie could do it, so should they. You'd think that, after the complaints about COD4 they would have changed this by now. Come on Activision, get your head in the game. If you want more satisfied customers, all you have to do is make split-screen available for online play.
You did it for facing eachother on a single console in Vs. mode...
Why can't you do it for online???

It is a great game otherwise and I highly recommend it to anyone.
ANYONE!

The on-line co-op in this game is a farce. Total BS and the previous post said it is not true online co op. What a waste!
by: Anonymous on 11.13.2008
I can't play with my 3 friends in the same room.

this game is a failure and so is this website for not putting the multiplay details down
by: Anonymous on 11.11.2008
wait, so you cant play splitscreen versus with other people online? that sucks
by: JasonSuave on 11.11.2008
yet another disappointing implementation of splitscreen. Here are the details in case anyone is interested:

4 player coop (with NO splitscreen - 4 separate consoles, online only)
2 player coop (with splitscreen - BUT NO other players can join online)

2-4 player local (local play online - NO coop, and NO online)

it's BEYOND me why no other developer can create a flexible splitscreen implementation, like Bungie. bottom line is: if you want two people on one console to be able to play online or with 4 players coop, forget it!

Recommend: Thumbs UpThumbs Down
