Within this constantly evolving and vibrant environment, the player leaps and swings between the lush plants, smashing into bizarre enemies and navigating around the undergrowth to gather treasures and pollen to grow more plants. The "PixelJunk" series of titles that have come out on the PlayStation Network have all been truly unique titles. (Read More)
Players take control of little things who must grow and evolve a garden. They do so by gathering pollen, which allows new plants to bloom. Players use a silk thread to swing from plant to plant, so as the garden grows, the player can reach new areas. The 10 main gardens are connected by an 11th "menu" garden. As you collect special seeds in the main gardens, additional plants grow in the menu garden.
Mastering the swing mechanic, particularly with a second or third person, is hard. Should a player be flung off-screen, they will die and respawn, costing time and the pollen that has been accumulated. By the second garden, we had improved considerably and had this happen less, but moving together through the garden still wasn't always easy.
But, when multiple players move and swing in unison, flowing through the garden from plant to plant, it's a beautiful, organic experience unlike anything else I've ever played. And it's fun once you have a good grasp of the mechanic.
This is not a game for everyone. It's challenging and at times frustrating in coop. But it's also a very unique experience that people interested in experimental gameplay should check out.
