The Technofuture in Modern Games

Yes, we are on the hype train because of Cyberpunk 2077. It will come to markets in December 2020. It still has a lot of attention from game magazines. For years and years, we have heard about the perfect fantastic game. Today, our nerd rage is explicit. Cyberpunk 2077 is a decent game but with a lot of code flaws and is still incomplete.

The industry, though, has given us examples of games about the future since the eighties. Even the best mobile casinos already have packs of “cosmic slots”, etc. They are bright and full of action. Also, the genre obviously has a lot of atmospheric thrillers. Harlan Ellison’s “I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream” was a big hit in the times of DOS.

Why must the future be about tech? Because the primal punk and additional retardation of mankind is a specific genre without a big audience. Mostly, we have a typical vision of the future, with shining skyscrapers and shady schemes in the dark alleys. Hence, most of the genres deliver us the general picture of the possible future.

One of the favorite parts of these predictions is so-called retrofuturism. This means some specific attributes:

reference to the past, a dedicated period. The core of the style and all setting is based on our earlier manifestations about the future;

  • This style is entwined with some relatively modern technologies. Atomic power within classic car cruisers from the fifties gave us the art look of Fallout, for example.

The popularity of the genre is practically everlasting. People love predictions. Also, nostalgia is a powerful thing. The youth of our civilization is attractive, and alternative paths of technical evolution can make some masterpieces from scratch. Let’s talk about the most epic achievements in the industry in this sphere.

The biggest titles of recent years

The vision of a new world can be too different. The main feature of these titles is just some details about the technologies or various elements of life beyond our expectations. Let’s see some of them.

  1. Death StrandingDeath Stranding Video Game

Or, “the pretentious walking simulator. Hideo Kojima made a scorched world with a really immersive atmosphere. The technologies here are pretty primitive but still relevant for the near future. The bipedal human couriers are the effect of the practically magic cataclysm, not the planned degradation of technology. Also, our courier is equipped with a lot of special scanners and tools for survival. Though, the game is for spectators, not avid tech lovers.

  1. 2064: Read Only Memories

A minor title, made in a 16-bit retro style. This game is a follower of the hype train the Cyberpunk 2077 announced. This is a minimalistic visual novel without rich RPG elements but still delivers us the rare sense of a composed and artsy universe of a new society without modern boundaries.

  1. The Outer WorldsThe Outer Worlds Game Online

Ambitious but short classic RPG story from Obsidian Entertainment. The huge roleplay options were announced, but we have an unfinished jewel. The tech here is not fro, the future of the Earth. It is dragging us into a bizarre world of space exploring, with humor, many exciting meetings, and diverse characters. Though, if you want to see a big classic RPG – this is definitely not a caliber of Fallout: New Vegas. The title is funny. Gamers are waiting for the epic sequel with a lot of stuff.

  1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

All the series are about fighting against deadly viruses and shady governments. Very immersive games with the possibility of world learning. Adam Jensen is an augmented agent with a tormented soul and indomitable will. The main activity here is immersive stealth. So, the protagonist has plenty of time to explore futuristic Detroit or Shanghai.

  1. Watch Dogs

A clever and unique game about hackers. This franchise is not about distant future tech. Primarily, it makes the big challenge: to show the world of information and hacker wars. Also, it is a GTA-like sandbox with random quests.

So, Watch Dogs gives us a halfling franchise. The streets and buildings are pretty familiar. The key wars for technologies are battling into the net. The crowd around the protagonist is also pretty usual. There are no extreme body modifications or levitating cars. This world is ours. And that’s why it is scary.

  1. VA-11 Hall-A

The rarest breed: a visual novel about a bartender simulator in the neon future. The technologies themselves here are manifested by cocktails, but there are many narratives about the outer world. The visitors are too talkative drunkards. And the bartender is everybody’s bosom friend. The dark and depressing themes are also widely presented here. The futuristic ooze makes its magic.

  1. Fallout: New Vegas

Yes, the big one. The father of retrofuturism with the big iron on his hip. Why don’t we talk about the classic dilogy? Well, time is heartless. Fallouts 1&2 are great games, but today they are very archaic in terms of gameplay. So, why not the Bethesda series. Well, this is the most technically detailed part. The Old World Blues is a brilliant satire about post-war heartless science.

Fallout: New Vegas Video Game

But the whole series has a ton of crossing references and rich lore. It is heavily recommended for every enthusiast and an average futurist. A lot of the genre’s tropes came from Fallout. It’s time to pay respect for the franchise!
