Canadian Gaming Company Acquisition Proves Country's Strong Video Gaming Presence

Earlier this year it was announced that PlayStation was planning yet another expansion with the acquisition of the Canadian gaming company Haven Studios. Haven Studios has officially become part of the Sony team and together they are working on developing a new idea that was described as an ‘AAA multiplayer experience’. So far, there are no extra details on what that means, but it is certainly going to impress a lot of tech enthusiasts and gamers.
The new development team is led by the CEO and Founder of Haven Studios, Jade Raymond, who is known for helping create one of the best AAA franchises. As part of this project, however, Jade Raymond and her team will be working on an original IP that is believed to bring forward incredible creative and technical expertise. The Montreal-based studio was the 18th to join PlayStation, following names like Bluepoint Games, Firesprite, and Nixxes Software. The acquisition is part of Sony’s goal to launch more than ten live-service games by 2026.

As a major contributor to the country’s economy, video gaming supports over 55,000 jobs, which, as a result, generated over $5.5 billion in Canada's GDP in 2021. Approximately 80% of the country’s game studios are found in cities like Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. There, video game designers can find exciting opportunities to show off their skills. Currently, there are over 900 video game studios in Canada and, although there has been an increase in the number of companies in all regions, Ontario and Quebec are top of the list. Almost 600 of the country’s video game companies reside in one of the two cities.
The main reasons Canada has such a strong gaming scene are the heavy government investments and the top-tier training programs. When the entertainment software industry started growing at an unprecedented rate a few years back, the country seized this opportunity and started investing in and promoting the video gaming industry. There are funding resources used specifically to finance and promote new, innovative projects, for example. Meanwhile, gaming companies based in Canada benefit from special tax regulations.

Recently, Canada has also started embracing the iGaming industry, with Ontario being the latest province to launch a regulated online gambling market. A series of licenses have already been handed out by iGaming Ontario, the body responsible for regulating the new market.
