New VR Ghostbusters Title Features a Multiplayer Experience
Got tired of ghostbusting in a typical New York setting? Then you’ll be pleased to know the recently-announced Ghostbusters title from Sony Pictures will support VR, feature a multiplayer mode, and take place in San Francisco.
Given the recent surge in popularity of the Ghostbusters franchise, the new entry in the series is hardly a surprise. Before this one, we’d had the pleasure to experience Ghostbusters: Afterlife on the big screens.

The new entry in the Ghostbusters video gaming series will simply be titled Ghostbusters VR. Since collaboration between players is the game’s main focus, players will be able to team up in co-op mode to hunt down evil ghosts.
The development has been entrusted to nDreams, and Sony Pictures Virtual Reality will act as the publisher. Since Sony holds the intellectual property rights to Ghostbusters, this was to be expected.
Since the same developer studio also happens to be behind several award-winning VR titles such as Fracked, Phantom: Covert Ops, and Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity, you’d be right to set your expectations high.
According to the press release statement made by Tomas Gillo, chief development officer at nDreams, Sony Pictures Virtual Reality is the perfect business partner to make the boundary-pushing new VR title a reality.
As for the gameplay details, apart from the footage shown in the trailer that reveals exciting bits and pieces of the gameplay, we can expect to see them in the final version once it’s released.
Mind that Ghostbusters VR is not the only Ghostbusters title announcement that has surfaced in 2022. A couple of weeks before it, the company announced Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, focusing on the multiplayer side of things.
Since both Spirits Unleashed and Ghostbusters VR appear to share plenty of similarities, it will be satisfying to know how they’ll differentiate when additional information becomes available.
At the time of writing, little is known about the release date of Ghostbusters VR. But when it does come out, it will be available on Meta Quest 2.
Based on the official announcement, the new title aims to give players an immersive experience in virtual reality. San Francisco will be your new headquarters from where you’ll be planning your next move.
As promised by the developers, your main task will be to come to the bottom of a profound mystery and reveal the truth. In your ghost-hunting quest, the game will give you a vast arsenal of tools to wield, including the iconic equipment every ghostbusting squad needs to have.
Whether in a team or as a solo player, you’ll track, trap, and blast the evil ghosts into oblivion. But bear in mind the upper limit of friends you can recruit to help you out is capped at 3 (a team can consist of a maximum number of 4 co-op players).
The developers have promised to include an extensive campaign packed full of engaging content for you to explore to keep you busy.
Note that the creators of the Ghostbusters franchise will be closely involved in the development of this project, and everyone taking part is excited to give the players an immersive, rich, and tactile VR experience that will knock your socks off. While these are quite some promises to live up to, the development team has made it happen before, so there’s reason to be excited for what they have in store for us this time around!
