The chances are you haven’t heard of the original Colossal Cave Adventure game. Your parents probably haven’t either. The text-based adventure was released by game developer Will Crowther in 1976 and took players on an exploration of a cave system in search of treasure. One year later, the game was expanded by programmer Don Woods.
Now the game has been reborn as a point-and-click adventure entitled Colossal Cave. The text has been replaced by immersive graphics, but the objective remains the same: solve puzzles, avoid foes, and find the treasure. The game has been developed and published by Cygnus Entertainment, and reimagined by video game designer and writer Roberta Williams.
The adventure genre has proven to be durable and versatile over past centuries. From Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1882 novel Treasure Island to the successful adventure movie franchises such as Indiana Jones, films from the genre released in 2022 such as The Lost City, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, and the video game spinoff Uncharted, which starred Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.
The adventure game genre appeals to our love of exploring the unknown, experiencing shocks and surprises, and the thrill of discovering buried treasure. The new iteration of the classic video game is creating plenty of buzz and has been described as one of the ten most anticipated video games of January 2023. Now the release of Colossal Cave on the VR platform brings the original game full circle, 47 years after the original was released, the reimagined version is at the cutting edge of the latest gaming technology.
The reimagining of the 1976 classic is part of a wider reintroduction to retro games in the industry.
