How Did Post Apocalyptic MMOs Become so Popular?

In the video game world, MMOs are massively multiplayer online games and they are also the most popular genre among modern players. The goal of this type of game is to engage players to cooperate and compete against each other, not against the computer. MMOs approach various themes, including sports, horror, and fantasy. If you think you have never heard of an MMO, then think Fortnite, Minecraft and World of Warcraft. All three examples are multiplayer online games that most people have probably heard of.

One of the most interesting relevant themes of the modern era of gaming is the post apocalyptic genre. This genre has been long present in video gaming, with the Fallout series being one of the best ever made. Developers seem to enjoy creating games that depict the end of the world as we know it and the rebirth of a new order. Such a game makes room for a lot of creativity in the storyline and technical skills that ultimately make the game look great and run smoothly.

There are various factors that contribute to the success of post-apocalyptic games. One of the most important is the broad storyline, with an emphasis on storytelling and world-building. A post-apocalyptic game usually begins with the backstory of what had happened. It could be set in the distant future after a nuclear war had destroyed the planet as is the case for Fallout 76. Or it could be about a viral epidemic that sweeps through the world, causing major chaos and an emergency lockdown, like in Tom Clancy's The Division game series.

Regardless of the backstory, these games feature all types of terrors, with a highlight on humanity's biggest fear: its ending. The aftermath of a disastrous event is never easy and players must figure out a way to survive and to help others do so as well. However, that is not a simple task, as usually there are monsters that don’t allow for that to happen. Monsters could be anyone, from creatures to governments and cults.

Of course, not all MMO games that have been successful follow characters in their attempt to restore life on Earth post a world-changing event. Most of them actually tend to focus on fantasy worlds. Often, successful MMOs go back in time to allow the player to live among Vikings, knights, and spartan warriors. Other popular titles fly toward the future where cyborgs and alien life abound. The weird and wonderful world of MMOs lets players become part of pretty much any world they wish, and the availability of free games means that players can try out different genres and scenarios to see what fits.

Over the past few years, there has been a greater interest in post-apocalyptic MMOs as developers have found ways to flesh out their concepts to produce immersive worlds. But the fantasy and adventure genres are also undeniably popular. So, in such a demanding market, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this genre.
