Dead Rising: Will The Zombie-Slaying Classic Return?

A gut-wrenching, action-packed, controller-breaking zombie slayer. That's what came to our Xbox 360 consoles in 2006. And with the game's release coming only 9 months after the release of the Xbox 360, it felt like a huge step forward in the console gaming world. Especially for the horror genre.

And now, rumors of a remake are rife. According to a renowned British journalist, Jez Corden, from Window Central, a reboot of the franchise could be on its way. This is all speculation, of course. However, it's enough to kick-start a big online discussion. The title's developers, Capcom, haven't released anything official (yet). But it got us thinking...

Journalist Jez Corden tweeted “If you’re a Dead Rising fan there might be something on the horizon for you too…”. He later added that he heard that it could be a reboot. pic.twitter.com/AK1E2egtLh

Plenty of games have been receiving remasters, so what if Capcom are planning to do the same with their beloved, classic franchise? The first game started it all, sure. But more importantly, it paved the way for the second game, Dead Rising 2 (2009), which arguably did everything the first game did, but better. Let's say they remastered it, here are two key things they could introduce to keep the game feeling fresh.

Casino mini-games

If you've played Dead Rising 2, you'll know how well it captures the casino setting. I mean, the proof is in the pudding - the name of the mall you play in is called Fortune City in Nevada. Chuck, the protagonist, can interact with some slot machines. But honestly, more could have been done here. If the game was remastered, Capcom could take a leaf out of GTA 5's book. The casino-related activities are much more defined, with an abundance of activities to do. Players can play poker in Dead Rising 2, so why can't they develop this further and include other popular casino favorites like roulette or baccarat?

This could be taken one step further, too. The game could introduce casino bonuses for players, rewarding them with different, unique in-game items that can redefine the way they play. These items would only be retrievable by playing the slots, rewarding players for taking part. Naturally, a similar incentive is used in real online casinos, particularly when trying to reach out to prospective players. Big brands offer bonus spins or loyalty points as part of their competitive casino welcome bonus UK packages for new players. By incorporating casino-related bonuses within the remastered Dead Rising, Capcom would be following the path paved by other console games and bringing something new to the franchise.

New zombies

All the zombies in Dead Rising 2 are the same. It's the psychopaths that are often the real challenge. But other infamous zombie games like State of Decay (2013) and The Last of Us (2013) have 'special' infected, too. It keeps the game challenging in the setting it thrives off - zombies! What's more, it offers variety. Being confronted by the same types of zombies that are a breeze to get past at the higher levels can become mundane.

At the end of the day, these are just suggestions for an already brilliant game. And although there is no confirmation of a Dead Rising remake, we doubt fans would be displeased with an announcement any time soon.
