Ok so we all know that RedBox is offering games now for 2 bucks a night so being a gamer on a strict budget I decided to give it a whirl to try out some games some of my friends have been playing.
Yesterday I picked up X-men Destiny for the 360 for the outstanding rental price of nothing.... thats right nothing see RedBox likes to offer tons of free rental deals and codes that allow you to snag a free rental, which I used to try out a game I otherwise would not have touched... and with good reason.
Story:
X-men desinty puts you into the shoes of three brand new mutants created soloey for the purposes of the game, being a fan of Colossous and Juggernaunt I decided to go with Grant on my first playthrough as he is the star football player from Georgia even though he lacks a southern accent. Anyway your character has no idea they are a mutant until a peace rally between mutants and humans is interrupted by an attack from rouge elements, in this life and death situation the action pauses and allows you to pick from three different powers to save your skin, I picked Destiny Control which covers your fists with solid rock to beat the piss out of your enemies, I won't spoil too much of the story as I have yet to beat it myself but it seems on par with many other comic games however the sense of urgency from the voice actors leaves alot to be desired.
Gameplay:
X-men Desitny has some pretty cool customization features in the form of X-genes, you not only get your main power you also get defensive genes, offensive genes, and utility genes; these make for some pretty cool options such as moving as fast as Quicksilver or to flying around like magento... well hovering you don't really get to fly high. However despite these options the game really falls flat due to repeative battles with genric enemies, I mean really you can only fight the same guy with a shocky stick for so long before it becomes a chore, this is also made worse by the fact that the game is essential a button masher with about three or four moves that you will use all the time. Controls can be a bit clunky at times, my character at random times would decide to walk instead of run which would get annoying.
Sound:
Not really anything to write home about here, it has a pretty decent comic book feel, but some of the voice actors are just plain terrible and most of the time make it seem like nothing is urgent even though the city is collapsing around them
X-men Destiny is a game that had so much potential, however it feels rushed and incomplete with many of the genes, and suits put in as an afterthought without giving much personality to the characters. I would say either give this a rent or wait till the baragin bin around the 10-15 dollar range which shouldn't be long.
I give X-men Destiny a 2 out of 5.
