What's in the Box? A Valve Project Viral Video?

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo March 19th, 2009 at 5:32 PM

The above capture is from a viral video making its way around the internet.  The video is title What's in the Box, and appears to be part of a viral campaign from Valve.  Why?  There's a lot of similarities with the style of the shots and look of the video with that of their games, especially ones in the Half-Life universe.  In fact, many of the sound effects used in the video are directly from Half-Life 2

There's really not much else out there, and frankly, we have no idea if it's game related or even if there's co-op.   But the video is so damn cool we figured we just had to share!

Update:  Turns out it's just a fan video.  Thanks Bakken Hood

Why not call it Half-Life 3?

The obvious guess is that this is the unofficial trailer for HL2E3, and that our unknown protagonist works for one Aperture Science Laboratories, and that the Great Big Thing at the end was the Borealis. Yes, I'm a nerd. In true nerd fashion, I squinted at every sign and every computer display, and what bothered me was all the English; as I recall, most of the text in the game suggested that City 17 is in eastern Europe. Plus, that aircraft didn't quite look like a Combine hunter-chopper, although this wouldn't be the first time a video-game enemy has upgraded its hardware in the minutes between two installments. The eternal pessimist in me wonders if someone is promoting their unofficial, unauthorized Half-Life "movie." But I hope it's real. I also hope Valve makes it available on consoles, dammit.

Well. I don't know when the news came out, but it's official: that video isn't official. It's fan-made and probably has nothing to do with any upcoming game.
