Take me to the Borderlands - Hands on Preview

Game Name: Borderlands
Co-Op: Yes - 4 Player
Co-Op Type: Full campaign, 2 player split with online.  Drop-in and drop-out
Publisher/Developer: 2k Games (publisher) / Gearbox (developer)
Release Date: Oct. 20, 2009

I'll admit, the game I was most looking forward to checking out at this year's Penny-Arcade Expo was Borderlands.  The promise of an open ended action shooter with tons of RPG elements and items to collect is exactly the kind of game I can waste hours upon hours enjoying.  I talked with Mikey Neumann of Gearbox about the game's co-op, and we've got some video of the game in action.  If you listen closely you can hear Randy Pitchford tell the story about the art direction being switched - and how it almost caused the project to get shut down!

As I sat down with the game in a local four player co-op session, it was immediately apparent the game is built for teamwork.  Enemies will scale not only in level and difficulty, but in numbers as the number of players increase in the game.  Several of the larger creatures took the work of all four team members to bring down the giant purple beast, who was able to separate the group as it charged us knocking players away.  It was a tense moment, especially when the raiders attacked us.  Soon we were down, and a short mini game pops up where you can fight for your life - or if you are lucky enough - have a teammate come by and revive you.  If not you'll respawn and have to work your way back.

The action in Borderlands was fast and frantic, only broken up by the on screen dialogue boxes of information for the weapons.

The game features an over arching story broken down by several storylines for the characters, that any character can play.  With over 50 in game areas, including towns where the missions are dealt out, there's plenty to keep you busy with Borderlands.

So did Borderlands live up to my expectations?  From the tease I saw of it I'd say definitely yes.  There's a ton of potential here for an addicting game, one in which you can co-op with up to three friends.   Split screen, online play, and LAN play are all at your disposal.

Wow! Im glad it plays as well as we hoped for so far. This game is definitely gonna be a blast!

Is there going to be a way to port to your team mates if you happen to die and are not revived?

smurphster at 04:18 PM on 9.4.2009
so jealous

so did they change their minds about splitscreen+online yet?

Mrxknown_JG at 05:25 PM on 9.4.2009
Nice action shots...any word on the current difficulty level of that first video.

If you play a sniper, does the levels support that or is it more of a "meant for key areas" type of deal?

Looking forward to more...

EDIT Ask how the GameStop bonus gun pack may actually affect the difficulty of the first few missions. And how long will it be before those weapons may become obsolete?

Good job guys...loving it!

Saw this one at the panel...and OMG. So far this is probably my game of the convention (although I have yet to play L4D2)

bapenguin at 06:35 PM on 9.4.2009
I'm pretty sure they said it is split screen with online. I will try to verify tomorrow.

smurphster at 06:43 PM on 9.4.2009

earlier interviews said they were working on it but it didn't sound good

edit: thanks btw

Jackel, you're alive! Thought we'd lost you at the Rock Bottom somewhere.

Nuhru at 07:02 PM on 9.4.2009
That weapon system sounds kinda cool but I hope you won't find there actually just few different weapons with slightly different stats.

Man, that looks crazy hectic, like a ton of info being flashed at you from all corners of the screen. I wonder how much of the HUD is necessary and if any portions of it can be shut off. I favor the clean, HUDless view if possible (though all that may be necessary for this).

I'm just a ninja like that. Plus I'm not nearly as awesome as all of ya'll with your media passes.

Hope you enjoyed yourself..it was great meeting ya in person.

Oh my, this game is going to be a big seller. That is if they pull it off right. Hopefully if this game is successfull, game developers will realise how many co-op fans there are out there, and will start to add co-op to more games. Especially split-screen.

I hope this gets out to Budapest GameShow 2009 where I could try it out BEFORE I buy it (October 23 -> Game ships here, October 17-October 25 (somewhere between) Budapest GameShow)

I have heard so many different things about the Splitscreen-online, I just hope it passes.

Makes me wonder will Borderlands be the co-op champion of 2009 like Left 4 Dead was for 2008?

2 play split with online?! YES!!!!! I'm going to go pre-order it this week now!

blakepro at 01:52 PM on 9.7.2009
Wondering if you could tell me how the language was. A lot of swearing? Options to turn it (swearing) off or tone it down?

Mrxknown_JG at 03:36 PM on 9.7.2009

Any luck confirming it?

Looking good borderlands .

Etanos at 04:31 AM on 9.8.2009
Again, hoping they keep this unique, instead of an FPS version of WOW. Though I already see the tank, DPS, nuker, crowd controller, lol.

bigtex at 05:21 AM on 9.8.2009
Watched these vids so many times! with the fast paced action as it is in these vids, I might go with the PC version. I've been swaying back and forth deciding which I want. 360 or PC.

.Dylan at 06:54 AM on 9.8.2009
I can imagine playing about a million hour of this game.

mattism at 07:58 AM on 9.8.2009
I have made Borderlands a must buy game for this year!

Tasark at 08:31 AM on 9.8.2009
This is just the icing on the cake for me. i'm so buying this game it's not even funny.

I wouldn't have even known about this game, let alone consider playing it, if it wasn't for Co-Optimus. Thanks guys!

Dschinghis at 09:32 AM on 9.8.2009
Really looking forward to the co-op on offer here, hope it lives up to the hype. Have they revealed all of the classes yet?

Also, my first thread comment! Great site guys, been following the news posts since the EvAv split. Been meaning to get more involved, and finally decided to post for a chance at the 360 giveaway. Some potential co-op friends live nearby, they've been talking about saving up for a 360 and it would make for a great holiday gift; plus, more co-op for me!

Torg001 at 09:57 AM on 9.8.2009
Looking forward to this, any word on a demo?

smurphster at 10:01 AM on 9.8.2009

last i heard they want to but they don't have time before release so we might see one later on. that was probably a month or two ago when i read that though so plans may have changed.

blakepro at 10:52 AM on 9.8.2009
My question is Xbox or PS3...

What it is going to boil down to for me is whether you have to have two gold accounts to do split screen online (if the game has it) Because if thats the case, I'll just get it for the PS3 and will have the ability to have as many friends play online with me as I want without paying for the extra live account.

smurphster at 10:59 AM on 9.8.2009

true, but do you have a lot of PS3 friends interested in the game? the PS3 thread is pretty tiny in comparison to the 360 thread

blakepro at 11:02 AM on 9.8.2009

Also a valid argument. Also, unless my wife ends up liking this game, I probably wont get a whole lot of split screen time with this game.

Mrxknown_JG at 12:29 PM on 9.8.2009

YES! Roland, Mordecai, Lilth, and the big tank guy.

mook06 at 03:06 PM on 9.8.2009
this seals the deal for me, cant wait for this game!

QuackTape at 03:06 AM on 9.9.2009
Games like this make me want to get a system link setup to have four buddies in one room ripping through monsters left and right. I'm definitely getting this game ASAP.

COG_Network at 07:35 AM on 9.9.2009
Kelegacy says...
The only game I know I'm buying this fall. Psyched so much.

Rogue_hunter at 01:55 PM on 9.9.2009
Ahh, here's the video mightbe got hovering over Randy Pitchford's shoulder. He's such a great camera man <3

Heretic Machine at 03:18 PM on 9.9.2009
This is easily my most anticipated game for this year. I'll be getting it on PC. I need to start convincing my friends to buy that version as well...

MSUSteve at 05:00 AM on 9.10.2009
ARGH! Why isn't this out already?! Between now and Borderlands' release there are a ton of good games coming out, but this might be the one I'm looking forward to most.

capthamp at 06:20 AM on 9.10.2009
