Left 4 Dead 2 Boycotters Visit Valve HQ

Marc "DjinniMan" Allie September 11th, 2009 at 10:07 AM

Hey, uh...whatcha doing with that gold plated crowbar?

We've got a pretty interesting story for you today, regarding upcoming zombie slaying sequel Left 4 Dead 2.  You'll recall that many people were understandably upset at the announcement of L4D2, coming so soon after the first game, and before any DLC had even been announced.  An internet petition and boycott ensued.  Valve decided to fly the two most vocal boycotters out to check things out and hopefully smooth things over.  (I guess internet petitions do work after all!)  Interested in what these two have to say after the visit?

We got a chance to take a look at L4D2 (including the version that was shown at PAX) as well as ask questions to the L4D/L4D2 team.

The good news: 4v4 matchmaking is supposed to drop before the release of Left 4 Dead 2. We have also been told by one of the fellows there that Crash Course is NOT supposed to be dropping this Thursday, but will be dropping 'soon'. We can't get into details, but we can definitely say that support for L4D is NOT being dropped by Valve and that they are actively pursuing bug fixes for Left 4 Dead. We're going to continue to talk to Valve and ask questions as needed, however if the frantic pace which we had seen people working at is any indication, we're not going to be left in the dust. The staff seemed to honestly love the original 4 Survivors and many said that “we're not done with them yet”.

As for L4D2, things seemed balanced and 'tight' and did not feel like a rushed job. While we were visiting their offices we personally witnessed what can only be called a small army of artists, coders, mappers hard at work, which explains the rapid transformations in artwork that we've all seen.

What we can say with confidence is that the quality of gameplay in Left 4 Dead 2 is not in question; and it will only get better (from what we understand, almost daily testing of game builds by most of the staff at Valve).

Additionally, the boycotters revealed that more DLC is coming for the first Left 4 Dead, even past "Crash Course".  That's very good news for zombie fans either way.

After reading this, it occurred to me that Valve seems to be supporting both versions of Left 4 Dead adequately in the future.  It's almost like games that come in two versions, most notably Pokemon.  You can play either game and have a great experience, but for all it has to offer, you'll want both.  We definitely fall into this latter category, and will play both games as long as the keep being supported!

To all the nay sayers put that in your pipe and smoke it lol.

I am glad they are still going to support the first game as well as the second. Way to go valve and way to listen to the community and give the people who were unsure a first hand look at the game. Nicely done indeed.

i bet there was a company-wide memo that basically said "the boycotters are coming, look busy"

It's a cover up! Don't trust Valve! They're a business out to make money! lul

That's fine and dandy and all, but why did they even bother to make a L4D2 in the first place then? Why didn't they just release a new campaign for L4D1 that costs money? Is it because they wanted to charge $60 to 360 players again?

this is stupid and pointless, I can guarentee you the day L4D2 came out there would be 13,000 copies sold. god gamers are whiny little bitches these days. Every single one of them would of gone and brought the game I can assure you. That's what sad little freaks like this do. I mean if I was going to bitch about anything it would be the need to buy a new console evry 2-3 years now when once a console lasted a decade, PC upgrading is becoming just as bad for games. So new games coming outnin less and less time makes sense in this day of must have can't wait idiot's. hell I remeber when we were quite content to play a crappy looking game for 10 years if the gameplay was good enough. But yeah, this and the whole TF2 hat stupidity, shows that Valves customers have gone from the hard core Quake players of old, to the pussy pokemon generation all grown up (and still as pussified) Why boycott now? I've been Boycotting Valve PC products and anything requring online activation since Steam was invented. (pay for my own HL1 CD key I already own?) I had no complaints about half life 2, I popped it into my xbox and of it wnet, no activation woes, no auto update crap, no need to have my internet always on and being screwed from being on dial up. If people paid attention to how bad Valves processes were after Half Life 1 went to their heads, we wouldn't be in this situation now. I blame the rabid "Valve can do no wrong after HL" fanboys that ate up and forgave everything valve did with a spoon and went back for more. Nothings changed, they bitch and complain, yet you know they'll still be playing and buying tomorrow. Hypocrites one and all.

release dates:
xbox: 2001
xbox 360: 2005
xbox ???: 2015 (assuming their stated 10yr life cycle for 360 holds true)

playstation: 1994
PS2: 2000
PS3: 2006

4-6 years by my count. consoles are considerably cheaper than PCs and there's no need for upgrades, i don't see a problem with buying a new one every 4-6 years. and nobody said you need to buy a console as soon as its released either.

valve has a pretty good track record for supporting their games, that's why people are mad about this. i doubt you'll find many boycotters here so your rant is misdirected. even if there were, you'd just be asking for a flame war. is that what you're going for?

you seem pretty annoyed at valve's activation and DRM. xbox live is just as guilty, if not more guilty, than valve so i don't see what the big fuss is all about. sure there were some issues early on, but from what i've seen, its not so bad anymore. there's certainly no reason to boycott valve over it.

you're so wound up about these "whiny little bitches" that you forgot that you too, are a hypocrite. calm down! relax! we're a pretty chill group so if you want to bash these boycotters, go find where they hang out.

that said, welcome to the site!

They Probably Started on the DLC after they found out how ticked everyone was.

L4D2 could have been a bunch of DLC for LFD1 there is not that much difference between 1 and 2 except they turn the Lights On...

Valve can get a Full Sequel out for Left for Dead in a Year, Yet their "Episodic Content" for Half-Life 2 takes Years... I thought the Episodic Content was so they could release it quicker... So where is Half-Life Episode 3???

I don't Like Valve because Gabe is so Pompous and Full of His Fat a$&

I wonder why valve made the boomer after the middle guy in that picture?

@Biohzrd, It's obvious PR-spin. Of course the guys are going to visit them and then say good things, to do otherwise wouldn't be good for Valve.

I bet they signed a contract saying they weren't going to bad mouth the game if they were allowed to visit.

I'm not saying (and never did say) L4D2 will be inferior to Left 4 Dead 2, but only time will tell if Valve keeps its word on supporting the first game.

But there's no way I will pay for a game I bought last year.

In fact, I'll do what most Madden players should do, wait for the next game coming next year. Just buy one every two years.

Biohzrd451 at 01:59 AM on 9.14.2009

Well from what I have seen/heard you will not be paying for a game you bought last year everything has changed about the dynamic that it is a new beast all together, however I am not trying to convince anyone to buy it, but I will get it day one to rock out some more on it.

I admit, I'm a sucker for L4D2/L4D simultaneous play. As a matter of fact, I think it's great that they're still going to bring more episodes with the original cast. As much as I might not do this with any other game, I love L4D enough to get future DLC for it, even after L4D2's release.

I'm going out on a limb and saying that you don't like Valve because Gabe doesn't like the PlayStation 3.
