When Co-Op Gets Cut: Majesty 2

Courtney "roland" Farr September 21st, 2009 at 8:48 AM

Majesty 2 released on Friday, September 18th, a game I've been ridiculously excited about. It's as much a re-imagining of Majesty as it is a sequel, as it's been so long since the original came out.

If you never played Majesty, it's an odd combination of SimCity + World of Warcraft + The Sims. Weird, yeah. But it was fun and it worked. You basically built the buildings of your empire, had a simple tech tree and recruited heroes. You had no direct control over heroes. Each class had a unique AI and would pursue its own goals. But, you could encourage heroes to do what you wanted by placing reward flags around the map with money attached to them. Later in a game, you could directly influence the world through a variety of spells to aid your heroes (healing, buff and attack spells).

Majesty's multiplayer had a fair number of options, including PvP and co-op. The co-op wasn't really compstomping that you would find in an RTS, it was more like an RTS version of Horde mode. Players would have to survive in a map for a set time, or until they had wiped out all monsters and/or lairs, or achieved some other victory condition. Even 9 years later, it's still fun.

Throughout the development of Majesty 2, the official message had been that co-op would be in the game and that multiplayer would be an awful lot like Majesty. This type of language was still on the official site right up until the day before the game was released.

In Majesty 2 our goal is to perfect different kinds multiplayer modes, like player vs. player as well as cooperative play. The Levelmaker (the person who creates the multiplayer map where the game is set) can enable either competitive or cooperative play during a mission. Then, players can choose which side to support. On maps which enable cooperative play, players can either play together against computer-controlled opponents, or in union vs. union – 2 players against 2 players.

But Friday, players discovered that co-op had been cut and that multiplayer in general had been vastly pared down compared to the original. No user defined conditions at all on any maps. Only 8 maps, each preset with number of players and conditions. No map editor. And no co-op, only a handful of PvP scenarios. No freestyle/sandbox type maps. A lot of people on the forums are very angry now, understandably. The language on the official website wasn't removed until a forum member pointed out that it was misleading advertising. The official site has been updated now, clearly avoiding indicating that anything co-op:

Majesty 2 is designed from the ground up with multiplayer gameplay in mind. We as developers do our best to offer players a wide range of competitive strategies towards development and victory, and to make multiplayer fast-paced and enjoyable. The behavior of the heroes was also designed with an eye towards multiplayer and battles between players themselves.

Game development is a long, complex process, we all know that. But promising options throughout development, and then not communicating their loss until after shipping the game is just unacceptable. It's been awhile since I was really angry that I had wasted my money on a game, but that's how I felt last night.

Thankfully the publishers are active on the forums and communicating with the fan base now about these issues. Everyone's hoping for a patch down the road to get at least some of the old options back into this game. But it's a shame we have to wait and hope, rather than just play the game we all loved so much.

That really does suck that they did that.

Pretty much a solid definition of a bait and switch. I loved the first game because it was so unique no other game had even touched on what you could do in Majesty, shame they decided to axe co-op out of the box.

I did end up playing some of the single player on Sunday. They've changed some things, added some stuff and removed some other old features. I like some of it (you can form parties of heroes now), and I miss some old features (the gnomes are gone). But, by and large I enjoyed the five or six missions I played. It only makes me wish that I could play it in co-op that much more.

Also, you can tell from the official forums how much co-op mattered to people. Co-op and freeplay mode are by far the two biggest features missing that have people riled up the most.

I have played this a lot since it was released, indeed I got the pre-order just to have a copy of Majesty as well.

The co-op being cut is a HUGE blow as I was wanting to play together with my wife in the game as it is a style she enjoys. Now that she has seen the pretty '2' version she is resistant to play the first one. Especially with all of the advancements, 'Hero List easily clickable/castable' & 'Variable Speed' being her favorite features. We have ended up only doing co-op in a seriously gimped way which is start a 3 player game and just take out the absentee computer that isn't even being controlled by an AI.

That is a big [princessbridehag">BaOoO [/princessbridehag"> to the promise and failure to deliver a competent multiplayer co-op or otherwise.

No Freestyle?! That is the number one thing that I keep playing in Majesty 1 to this day.

Losers, no purchase unless they add it.

I was really looking forward to this as well. I loved Majesty but without freeplay and/or good multiplayer options it just isn't worth it.

I will be checking back to see if they patch these features into the game in a future update. Hopefully co-optimus will run a story on it if and when they do.

sounds like they ruined what could've been a great sequel to the most fun RTS-Sim I ever played. Pass.

At the very least, I'll mention it in the forums if it does finally get patched in.

One thing from all this is that I've discovered how many people loved the original. For a long time, I didn't know anyone besides my old roommate who had played it back in the day, and this weekend I suddenly found tons of people who love, and still play, the original.

Dang. My girlfriend and I had been eagerly awaiting this, then given up and forgotten about it since it took so long...and now it finally comes out but missing co-op? I shall now be very sad.

I never talk when I play online on COD. No one really says anything worth listening to, or no one talks whatsoever.
