Beyond Co-Op Review: Unmechanical Extended Edition

If you had told a 14 year old me that physics was fun, I would have probably hit you over the head with a bag full of Magic the Gathering cards; it was one of my worst subjects at school.  However, the likes of Half Life 2 and many indie puzzlers have proven that not only is physics fun, it can make for some of the most inspired games.  Unmechanical is perhaps not at that level, but does offer a series of increasingly complex puzzles that will require you to use the game’s physics to solve them.

Beyond Co-Op Review: Batman Arkham Origins

WB Interactive must look enviously across at Ubisoft as yet another annual Assassin’s Creed is churned off the assembly line.  How can we possibly make something like that?  Perhaps we could farm out our biggest franchise to another internal studio and make a game a year.  Hence we have Batman: Arkham Origins by WB Montreal, a game that is still part of the Arkham franchise we know and love, but like with the later Assassin’s Creed games, lacks that certain spark.

Beyond Co-Op Review: Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventure

I imagine that Pac-Man has a rich baritone.  He is a man who has seen things; George Clooney would play him in the film of his life.  You have to be a certain age to date Ms. Pac-Man, or as rumor has it- become Ms. Pac-Man.  Either way you are at least in your 20s.  Not according to Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures.  Here we join Pac-Man in high school, all burgeoning testosterone and overconfidence.  He must find out why there are so many new ghosts around if he is going to save the world of Pacopolis.  He does this by basically platforming a lot and eating as many things as his huge round face will take.

Beyond Co-Op Review: Lost Planet 3

Both Lost Planet and Lost Planet 2 were flawed games, but had something charming about them.  The first game was a solid shooter with a main character called Wayne, which was enough for me to enjoy it.  The second incarnation excelled as a 4 player co-op experience; the controls may have been a little funny, but there was great joy in bringing down Sir Om Nom Nom as a pack.  In 2013, Capcom decided to do away with the slightly eccentric Japanese feel to the series and farm out development to Spark Interactive.  They in turn created Lost Planet 3 and a more charmless experience you would be hard to find.

Beyond Co-Op Review: Walking Dead - Survival Instinct

Shambling, incoherent, messy, boring, lifeless, limp, smelly, decayed, all these words can be used to describe Zombies, but also Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.  A game so poor, that if I were locked in a room surrounded by the undead with only this to play, I would open the door and open my arms to the sweet mercy of death.
