Well... Sony, as it turns out, because Alienation will soon be available for free through May's PlayStation Plus lineup for all our EU readers.

New Content, Free and Paid, Out Now for Alienation

On the free side, Weekly Missions are being added to the game. These special assignments will task you and up to three of your friends with completing some familiar goals with unusual modifiers. If you succeed before the next mission drops the following week, you'll get some special rewards, like some new armor (a new loot option added as well) with different modifiers. Finally, a new difficulty level has been added and the Hero level cap has been increased,

Local Co-Op Patch Coming to Alienation Next Week

The Finnish developer announced the news on the PlayStation Blog yesterday and also revealed their plans for some paid DLC. First off, though, the update next week. As I mentioned before, this is a free update to the game that will allow you and a group of friends to plop down on the same couch and play together. The loot rules do change, however. In online co-op, all loot is instanced; in local, it will be "first come, first serve." So, please, be kind to your friends and don't grab all the gear for yourself.

Alienation Patch Lets you Form a Squad

Though it's not a part of the update, the local co-op feature is still in the works. In fact, the developer even made note of this in their blog post about the patch and that they would provide an ETA for it as soon as possible. Here's a full list of all the updates and additions in the patch.

Alienation's Weapon Upgrade System Detailed, Explosion Art

Along with the video (featured below), Housemarque put up a post on the European PlayStation Blog detailing the weapon upgrade system in Alienation, which is its "metagame." Much of that game seems to entail getting better loot to make numbers go up, but it also sounds like the developer wants players to put some thought into the guns they use and develop one that best fits the way they run and gun. Essentially, players will be able to loot guns and cores. The cores come in four different flavors, and each core can be upgraded five times to unlock new effects. Mix and match the cores to produce a gun that does exactly what you want a gun to do, like shoot lightning or make a bunch of explosions.

Housemarque are responsible for the highly entertaining Dead Nation and, like that game, Alienation is a twin stick shooter. However, this is a evolution on the format as they have added classes that will change how you play and aid you in the 4 player online co-op.
