Cthulhu's Reach from The Fine Arc and First Break Labs is a Steam Early Access roguelike shooter based on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. It features a unique retro art style and isometric graphics, plus the all-important 4-player online co-op. While the game had some good foundations when it debuted, it was somewhat lacking in content. The latest update goes a long way to rectifying that by adding a map editor, not to mention some balance and bug fixes.
Map Editor key features:
- Tools to place and move Map Blocks, Weapons, Enemy Spawners and Traps.
- Inspector Panel - Tweak properties of placed objects
- Test map - Test your map directly inside the editor.
- Mod.io - Download maps from Mod.IO to play other players' creations.
More Version 0.8.43 update changes:
- New Incantation Synergies: The Fury of the Burning Star (ignited effects) and Pact of the Burning Star (flamed effects) sets now offer unique synergies when used together.
- Blood VFX Overhaul
- New font type for better character support.
- Balancing of Flamethrower DPS.
- Bugs and fixes
In my previous play sessions, Cthulhu's Reach's clumsy UI and frequent bugs threatened the fun of teaming up with friends to explore creepy island dungeons. My team eventually decided to wait for further updates so that we can enjoy a smoother experience. That said, we liked the premise and dark atmosphere of the game. Hopefully, updates will keep coming at a good pace. This one has the potential to become quite addictive once the developers get the metagame, user experience, and enemy variety right.
Cthulhu's Reach: Devil Reef currently costs $9.99 on Steam.
