Massively multiplayer online games are enjoyable enough, but they tend towards the dark and gritty side of things. Why can't they feature more love and justice? That's what New York-based Pahdo Labs is cramming into Starlight Re:Volver, a cooperative MMO that's due out on Steam Early Access later this year. We played an early demo in co-op and were impressed with the game's charming aesthetics.
Starlight Re:Volver will feature:
- Large-Scale Multiplayer: Bring friends to explore NIM's lively cityscape. In online servers supporting dozens of concurrent players, play a variety of minigames inspired by Asian cultures, customize your character's abilities and appearance, and celebrate with firecrackers and fanfare.
- Playfully Explosive Combat: Engage in unique four-player co-op. Smash Twilight Crystals to dynamically alter terrain, garnering advantages in combat and uncovering hidden treasures. Trigger spectacular Magic Combos to break enemy defenses for satisfying team plays. Master these unique systems to gain the upper hand in combat and exploration.
- Wide Character Progression: In this RPG, discover new combinations of Charms in each run, transforming your Diver's skills in unexpected ways. Craft powerful gear, unlock new abilities, and customize your Diver’s appearance with fashionable skins and accessories.
- Vibrant, Anime-Inspired World: Immerse yourself in rule-bent dream worlds filled with wonder and nostalgia. From floating islands to interstellar starbases, each area of So Mi offers a distinct visual and gameplay experience.
- Signature Soundtrack: Get lost in the game's electro-city pop sound from music talent including Sarah Bonito (from Kero Kero Bonito), Miyolophone, LilyPichu, and more!
In the demo we played, teams of colorful heroes progress through a series of short areas, clearing enemies, picking up a reward, and then heading to the next area. Matchmaking is built-in, so finding a team is easy. Co-op players can revive each other when downed. Text chat is built in, thankfully.
The demo does not support controllers. Players move with WASD, dash and activate powers with other keyboard keys, and use the mouse to click on enemies. This style of gameplay is common enough on PC, but I would definitely prefer controller support. Perhaps that will come in time.
Starlight Re:Volver will come to Steam Early Access in Q3 2025.
