EA Games Redwood confirmed this morning that G.I. JOE: The Game is in development, hoping to coincide with the release of Stephen Sommers' summer movie G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra. Both game and movie are due August 07th.

The game will feature "single screen co-op" for two players, which we're assuming will be in isometric view. "Go JOE!" You can high-five your friends in person!

Pick up the action where the blockbuster movie leaves off.

  • Assemble an elite JOE team and call in reinforcements when the mission gets down and dirty.
  • Choose from 12 of your favorite JOEs, each with a unique set of skills and weapons.
  • Gear up with the latest in high-tech gadgets.
  • Jump into, steal or hijack powerful G.I. JOE or COBRA vehicles, then fire away!

EA CONFIRMS DEVELOPMENT OF ACTION-PACKED G.I. JOE®VIDEO GAME INSPIRED BY UPCOMING FILM FROM PARAMOUNT PICTURES, SPYGLASS ENTERTAINMENT AND HASBRO
G.I. JOE Set to Invade All Major Video Game Platforms in Summer 2009
Guildford, UK 11th February 2009 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that development is underway to bring Hasbro’s legendary G.I. JOE® brand to all major console and handheld gaming platforms in summer 2009 to coincide with the theatrical release of the G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA live-action movie from Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment, in association with Hasbro, which opens in theaters 7th August 2009. EA will unveil a “first look” of the G.I. JOE® video game at Hasbro’s Showroom at Toy Fair on 15th -17th February, 2009 in New York City.

“As Hasbro and Paramount Pictures reignite the G.I. JOE® property this year with an all-new toy line and film, EA is excited to play a major role in bringing this icon of pop culture history to a new generation of enthusiasts through interactive gaming,” said Chip Lange, General Manager and Vice President of EA Hasbro. “G.I. JOE® offers exceptionally rich storylines and a cast of characters that lends itself incredibly well to creating an over-the-top action adventure video game that will thrill gamers as well as G.I. JOE® fans.”

For fans of all ages, 2009 is gearing up to become another watershed milestone in the timeless franchise by introducing even more new ways to engage, immerse and play within the G.I. JOE® universe. The G.I. JOE® video game will feature an exclusive storyline that picks up where the live-action movie leaves off, allowing players to re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line. The game will feature 12 G.I. JOE® characters, each with unique abilities and weapons. Adding to the adrenaline rush will be an intense single-screen co-op mode allowing two players to easily unite as a team in a classic struggle between good and evil as they work together to defeat the powers of the COBRA organization. The G.I. JOE® video game is under development for Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Wii™, PlayStation®2, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), Nintendo DS™, and mobile devices.

“G.I. JOE® has been an icon of action for 45 years,” said Mark Blecher, General Manager of Digital Gaming and Media at Hasbro. “EA has tapped the legacy of the G.I. JOE vs. COBRA saga to create an amazing interactive experience inspired by the movie, comic books, animated series and iconography that we hope will resonate with millions of fans.”

For more than four decades, G.I. JOE® has been one of the premiere brands in the history of boys' toys. Originating the term "action figure” in 1964, Hasbro’s G.I. JOE® brand ushered in a new play pattern that forever changed the scope of the toy industry. The G.I. JOE® brand made another revolutionary introduction in 1984 with the release of the G.I. JOE vs. COBRA toy line, which introduced a generation of boys to the heroic G.I. JOE® forces, led by Duke, and their epic struggle to defeat the evil COBRA organization. The G.I. JOE vs. COBRA saga featured a diverse cast of characters – both good and evil – that became a part of pop culture through Hasbro’s toy line, an animated television series and best-selling comic book franchise.

But what about kung-fu grip?? And "break out your berets?" Flint SUCKS! Forget berets, real men wear those dinky helmets the first series came with which were so easily lost. Remember Flash's had a sweet clear visor that slid down?

On a serious note, is it online co-op too? And I HATE that all these new movie versions of old IPs are reinventing their costumes/uniforms! They did it with X-Men, they're doing it with GI Joe, and I just don't like it. Dang, left the rant lock on there...

I can't complain about the costume changes for GI Joe and X-Men. The Joe costumes look appropriate for a highly fictionalized spec-ops team. And did you really want to see Hugh Jackman in yellow spandex? Superman not looking like he's wearing an american flag is just wrong though.

I'm sure at least Snake-Eyes will have kung-fu grip

Also, Sega announced an Alien's vs. Predator game that should be released before Aliens:CM!

We're see if the movie even has talent....then the game will either be good or worst.

GI Joe game based on the cartoon = good the movie.. not so much.

Seriously if they did a cartoon style GI Joe battlefield type game I would buy it. COOOBBRRRAA!!

Rumor has it that Cobra Commander has neither a the classic visor, nor the awesome hood. That, plus the August release date, have me worried. Have any good movies ever come out in August?

None that I know of, and this was the first I have even heard of the movie.

I've heard of it from IGN, but I never knew when or if it was coming.

Everything about this just seems so bad, I can't imagine a good game or movie coming out of this.

It would never be made, but a team tactics game based on GI Joe would be awesome. I'm seeing something like the Commandos series (when it was still good) would work really well in the GI Joe universe.

I seem to recall GI Joe: The Atlantis Factor (think that's right) on the NES having differences in classes/weapons. I agree with Bio though, a game based on the (moderately cheesy) cartoon would ROCK! Think how much fun it'd be if you could do a whole game and no one dies, just like on the show!!!

Yeah or if your weapon was only accurate against machines. The Joes couldn't hit the broadside of a barn but let one B.A.T. get on the scene and it'd be nothing but headshots!

Don't forget tires and antennas! Those things were bullet magnets!

BigBadBob113 at 01:51 PM on 2.12.2009
Heck, Im just happy the game has some co-op...and full-screen co-op at that.

txshurricane at 06:52 PM on 2.12.2009

I never watched the cartoon much, but I did read a lot of the comics. Sounds to me like they went to the same boot camp as the A-Team!

Mrxknown_JG at 04:09 AM on 2.13.2009
I had the G.I. Joe toys and watched the cartoon. I had a huge ball Death Star-style base that i think belong to the Cobra's but I'm not sure.

My room was full of Joes covering each other....hey that's co-op!
