Yesterday, Infinity Ward Community Manager Robert Bowling posted on Twitter that a 10-page exclusive reveal of Modern Warfare 2 would be featured in the next issue of Game Informer.
It was inevitable that scans of the article would hit the internet, but I think this is some sort of record: this morning an article popped up on hub site Colony of Gamers providing some information gleaned from the magazine write-up. While a few of the details are exciting, it is not all good news.
You see, Infinity Ward has decided to forgo the co-op campaign in exchange for a series of side missions called the Special Forces mode. While the prospect of these co-op missions is interesting, they should not be completely en lieu of co-op in the single-player campaign.
What's ironic is that the developers fully acknowledge that co-op is wanted. I just can't wrap my head around a top-notch development studio asking its fanbase for input and then blatantly appeasing them with lackluster results, i.e. gimped co-op.
Despite my obvious aggravation, I'm dumping ketchup all over these words...because I'm holding out that Infinity Ward will make me eat them. Lover of all things co-op that I am, I'm still supremely stoked for Modern Warfare 2's campaign and multiplayer...and yes, I will spend more than my fair share of time in the Special Forces mode. If they decide to go the way of Treyarch and surprise us with a goofy tack-on like Nazi Zombies...well, that just may placate me further.
But it's like getting a1970 Dodge Charger without the Hemi, ya know?
Here's the full list of details, as provided by Colony of Gamers:
Single player enemies will have "customized" weapons similar to the multiplayer component of COD4.
The ice mission shown to GI demonstrated the game's open-ended approach to combat, showing how stealth can be implemented if the player chooses.
While the gameplay is open-ended, the story is "on-rails".
Infinity Ward realizes that the "invisible line" where enemies will stop coming in COD4 wasn't great, so they're trying hard to eliminate that. Also, they are lengthening the single player past the 6-10 hour mark of COD4.
"Special Forces Mode" is a major part of MW2, a series of missions in the spirit of the Mile High Club from COD4. It will also have co-op in this mode. Gears-style bleed-out-and-partner-revive will be used.
Co-op apparently won't exist in Story Mode.
Riot shields will be implemented in the game.
Zakhaev's former associate, Makarov, is the "new face of global terrorism."
Snowmobiles are used as a form of escape in the demonstration. Unclear whether or not the player will drive, shoot, or both.
Players will alternate using the two triggers to climb ice-walls.
Movable turrets will be used in SF mode and Single Player, no official word on online use.
IW wants to implement an accomplishment system to online, as they want to make their players famous.
Online mode will use a "Live-Patching" system, where IW can manipulate spawn logic or certain parts of a multiplayer map without doing a full-blown patch.
Another demoed area shows an enormous desert setting where Task Force 141 drops into a wasteland and must navigate a "lengthy trek" to a fully-rendered valley with scattered caves, reminiscent of Iron Man.
IW is focusing on details for the COD4 sequel, citing iced-up tire treads in the Russian level.
The game will run in 60fps (duh).

Does that mean Special Forces will be timed? I hope not.
Yea that would suck I am not a huge fan of timed missions, it takes away from the overall enjoyment of a game if you are fighting the clock to just clear a level, pretty much forces you to take one route to complete the game and follow that everytime you do it.
This could be the dealbreaker between rental and purchase for me.
Couldn't agree more, you would think after seeing the success of other coop games they would at least try and make a coop story, if anything Modern Warfare is the perfect place to implement coop.
I was one of the few that thought that CoD 4 wasn't "all that". And this one not having story co-op makes it a no-buy for me. Moreso after all the fun my mates and I had with CoD 5
Boo, hiss to you IW.
Exactly. Its pretty much the only way I'll get to play through shooter games is by having a buddy over for some split screen co-op action while my wife is entertained with something else.
If you think that a co-op campaign is "one small feature", then I think you forgot what site you were on. (Hint: Co-Optimus).
And I doubt anyone here is means by not having Co-op Campaign the game will suck or be inferior to previous COD works.
We are merely stating our disappointment that the game is missing a feature that is gaining momentum every year in the industry.
And as txshurricane has mentioned we are on Co-optimus.com which means we are particularly concerned with co-op features which means our subjective requirements to BUY a game revolves around co-op features.
This doesn't mean there won't be any posts praising the fun and stellar gameplay this game will have once the game goes live.
And heck, it still has co-op in it. And since that feature is still shrouded in secrecy there is still hope that, that one co-op feature may turn the tide.
To me it translates into "we're to lazy to even TRY to make this work. So we're just going to do the minimum ammount of work activision requires us to do."
If you want the epic groundbreaking experience play it in single player. For the rest of use there should be co-op.Either tacked-on (all it really needs to be) or not.
Adding co-op doesn't have to demand any accommodation to the single player story or experience. Take out levels from the single player campaign that absolutely positively don't fit for co-op play (like in WAW) if they must, and leave the single player as a mind blowing experiance for the co-op haters.
Also, one more thing, co-optimus got a piece of info wrong. Infinity ward is not lengthening that 4-5hr campaign that was in COD4. They are keeping it at the same short length. want to hear there lame ass excuse?
"Stretching out the story seems like the wrong way to go".
Yea, definitely not a $60 game im going to be buying. are they deliberately NOT trying to please fans? What was the whole damn point about that "what feature would you want in MW2?" twitter post about anyway?
I don't know if it's so much laziness as it is deadlines, paperwork, and manpower.
And about our flub: we're just quoting COG, which I believe is now edited.
It makes my blood boil, because it comes off as they are willingly not trying to give more bang for our buck
I don't hate IW and I love COD4, I wish them the best of luck with the development process. I just cant afford another 5hr campaign at $60 with no co-op(not big on multiplayer neither).
I thought about this, too, and mentioned such in the article. I certainly hope it's the right way to go. I end up spending a lot of my World at War time in Nazi Zombies, so maybe the same will ring true for Special Forces.
to me substandard is what turok,gta4, and graw offered us as co-op(though the missions were more plentiful and fun for graw)
I just hope this new special forces mode is meaty with content and fun with lots of replayability like L4D,nazi zombies, & horde. Then maybe I might buy it.
