This Week In Co-op: Mercenaries 2

Bring it!

Some games just seem to be made for messing around. Storyline and missions will be cast aside from time to time, since everyone wants to throw a truck at someone some days. Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is a game perfect for such a day. Sure, the story is plenty amusing. After all, you'll be shot in the gluteus maximus before long. It's just nice to cast all those "mission" responsibilities aside now and then. Especially when some silly person hands you a rocket launcher without the "play nice" disclaimer.

This week in co-op, I spent some quality time with bapenguin in Mercenaries 2 doing just that. Messing around. While playing Mercenaries 2, a number of amazing things happened in just a few hours of play. Right off the bat, while driving large vehicles, we discovered that all of the pedestrians in Venezuela are suicidal. Pedestrians would virtually line up to be smooshed by your tank, truck, or stolen car. Many would dive directly into traffic when the maniac (one of us) would be driving in the streets!

What was this about throwing a truck at someone? In a literal sense, that did happen. I threw a tank at a helicopter using a ramp, tape, and bubble gum (no bubble gum or tape required). While working on a mission to set beacons on rooftops and junk yards, I hijacked an enemy vehicle while bapenguin took care of a helicopter. Evil Knievel was mentioned, and we wanted to see if you could jump a helicopter with said truck from the roof of a building. Needless to say, it didn't quite work. I hit the front of the helicopter like a brick wall, and plummeted to the ground in a blaze of hysterical glory.

As a mercenary, things tend to explode around you. A lot. Sometimes you're hit with a rocket that launches you several blocks away, where you land on a rooftop. Sometimes your vehicles explode with you inside them. While in a burning vehicle, it is recommended that you stop, drop, and roll as far away as possible before that vehicle explodes.

While in such a scenario, bapenguin and I rolled for our lives, and a passing vehicle decided to give our burning truck a nudge with his bumper. Both the truck and car exploded, sending doors and wheels flying every which way. Meanwhile, the silly driver kept trying to drive forward as though the doors hadn't just been blown off his vehicle! Soon afterward his vehicle went kaboom, and he flew out the (doorless) side faster than an anorexic too short to ride a roller coaster.

A few glitches, some massive explosions, and co-op is all you need to have a blast in Mercenaries 2. Just a helpful hint, several (not all) Best Buy locations have a 15% discount on the $19.99 title in store! What're you waiting for? Hit me with your best truck.

While playing the first Mercenaries, I once got a lucky shot on a helo pilot who was attacking my escort convoy. The chopper swerved, fell, exploded, and the fiery wreck swept us all off the cliff. I'll never forget that moment, and Mercs 2 is full of them.

The best time I had was on the oil rig my friend called in a bunker buster to take it out, well i hijack a chopper and he is screaming in the mic "Fire up the blades!" so i get it going and I take off without him saying "there isnt time to save you" so i flew off into the sunset without him. good times.

Me and Samoza were playing the game, both in helicopters. As is common in our co-op sessions, he randomly decided to attack me.

This time around the game glitched out, and as his rocket hit my helicopter, his blew up!!

A really fun game to play - but must be played in co-op for the best experience.

Agreed 100% I wish they had added more mercs to play as.

JG and I rocked this game something fierce! We had a ton of glitched moments and also a few issues with the tether. It really comes down to making one person "in charge" who gets to call the shots. After establishing that it's much easier and you get more done.

REALLY fun game though.

If anyone wants to try some wild wacky stuff, there are a couple DLC for mercs2. I think I may be the only one that downloaded the stuff. One was a tank battle mode and the other was a skin set to make the the mercs look like Obama and Palin for 160points with no return or salability is for me the big downside on DLC. Im was surprised that political likeness wasnt moderatex out. There have been much less controversial Littlebigplanet levels taken down.
Anyone else hear about these skins?

That DLC was actually free for a few months. But now they upped it to that 160 price point. Should have got it when it was free =

i've been tempted to get this game but no split screen . i might just have to splurge and get another 360 sometime.

That's quite the splurge, you'd need another TV as well...

my computer isn't too far away and has a nice 20" LCD. there are several games that have been dropping online split-screen so its tempting. but of course that means i'd have to buy 2 of each game & DLC. that's where the real expense would be after a while. blows

I bought Mercenaries2 for the PS3- I thought it was pretty cool but it confusesed me a little and I still haven't tried the co-op in it. I did get the DLC because it only cost $1.99 & I've noticed nothing different
