Mass Effect 2 Interview with Lead Writer Mac Walters

News
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

Bioware was kind enough to let us chat with Mass Effect 2's lead writer Mac Walters.  We talked about the various improvements in the game.  One really interesting piece of the discussion deals with how your data carries over from Mass Effect 1.  And of course we ask the question - what happened to co-op?

We've posted the full audio right below for listening or download!

Man, your saved game carrying over from the first Mass Effect sounds cool enough for me to want to play the first game again to see what kind of messed up continuation of the story I might step into for the second one, lol.

Likewise! I need to rebuy this game but I've kept waiting for a version that includes the DLC.

I need to do another run through of ME before 2 comes out. Carrying over info is a huge plus for me.

We'll get a transcript up eventually. Too short on time right now though. It's a quick listen, only about 7 minutes.

Wondering if I should get the first game and play through it. Is there any reason to play through it again once you have beat it? Maybe Gamefly would be more appropriate.

Loved the first one, but it did lack depth. Mainly in the scanning random planets for resources area.

Let me tell you, I got the game the day before Thanksgiving the year it came out. It took me a week during the holiday off from school to play the game...basically non-stop. I did everything the first time through.

After havign done that, it;s hard for me to go back and beat the game a second time. But I did, however, I didn't start doing it until this spring.

The problem, is that I was going for the achievements for playing through the game with your allies. There are six allies and six achievements for beating the game with each respective ally. However, you must do all the sidequests & main quests. That is a lot of content. And add to what someone else said, they do repeat levels from one planet to another, it's not always exactly the same, but the textures do remain relatively the same.

Also, save and save often.

Maybe it just speaks to my low standards, but I played through it five (5 [five {V}">) times and got every Achievement, except the new ones for the useless Pinnacle Station DLC. I'm currently working my way through a sixth campaign, doing everything "right" (i.e, Soldier with Singularity as a bonus ability, i.e. unstoppable killing machine, plus making my choices carefully) so I have a good starting point for ME2. I admit, this sixth replay feels stale, but I really did enjoy most of my runs.

There are a ton of sidequests that seem like they should have more repercussions than they turn out to (remind me, Mr. Shadow Broker, why did I help you?); I expect I'll have to live with some of my choice in ME2, which may give ME1 more replayability. I do hope, though, that ME2 gives you a way to create a ME1 "playthrough" without putting ten hours or more into a playthrough. There's no bloody way I'm scanning all those mineral deposits again just because I want a different start to the second (or third) game.

I know you have different options of what to say when you are talking to people, but how much can/does the story line change based on your decisions? I would think that the game pretty much pushes you through the same basic story with a few variations, but I could be way off.

Yes, duh (sorry). But I don't know how BioWare will resolve that. I think, I heard that there will be a conversation where your answers will state that happened in the last game.

BioWare has said that people that HAVE played the first game should keep their saves, but they have also said that they want to allow new players to not worry about having to play the first to enjoy and take part in the second game.

they would really be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't.

I'm sorry. I'm trying really hard to be happy that they're making a sequel, but no co-op means I won't be playing it. Weird, huh? most people who MADE this site aren't even THAT fannatic about co-op... lol

I actually have no problems with this game not having co-op. The first game was so phenomenal, I don't think co-op would have really increased it's playability much.

That's why I said "duh". Cause I don't think anyone that plans games like that would/should forget people coming into the middle of it.

Man, I loved the first game. The annoying elevator loads were my only issue with the first game, so if it's true that they're addressed now, then I'm all good.

Evil Chris talked me through the PAX demo. I actually preferred having the ammo counter instead of the unlimited ammo with quick overheat from the first game. Once he told me to use the heavy weapon missile launcher, that demo went from "oh, more of the same" to "OMG, game-breaking but really REALLY fun." at least the heavy weapons stuff is rare so it won't be as bad.

First one was a lot of fun, sounds like the sequel will remedy a lot of the major flaws.

*sigh* Another game gets added to the revisit-before-the-sequel-launches queue.

I should really go back and give this game a second chance. It lost me early on, and since I spent very little money on it, I felt no real motivation to go back to it. I'm kind of biased against Bioware games anyway, but I dig the art style they went with...

Wow I wasn't keeping up and actually thought the co-op was confirmed. Also I just noticed that all comments are auto forum posts, that is awesome, I am guessing this is a liquidweb feature so I'm gonna check it out.
