Borderlands DLC Announced and it has Zombies!

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo October 15th, 2009 at 10:35 PM

I'm pretty sure Zombies are like some fashion trend that just won't go away, something akin to witty t-shirt.  The Borderlands discs aren't even cool yet from manufacturing, or in gamers hands for that matter, but the first DLC pack has been announced.

Titled The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, players will embark on a cooperative journey to kill those poor undead souls that we've been slaughtering mercilessly for the past few years in our video game outings.  The DLC will cost $9.99 on the PS3 and PC and 800  on the 360.  No date was given on the pack.

There's a video of it over at GiantBomb.

Thanks everyone who sent in this tip!

looks great, alot of people over on the linked website seem to be upset about this being so soon and isnt on the retail disc, i guess they dont realise games are finished / printed to disc ~2 months before we see them in stock

Mrxknown_JG at 06:46 PM on 10.15.2009
@mook06 Actually, the game just went gold a week ago. But at some point you have got to stop adding content to the retail version and get it "done"

Shazoo at 07:29 PM on 10.15.2009
If they've been working on DLC already then the game should be pretty well polished. If it's not, then there's room to be upset.

SwissyJim at 07:50 PM on 10.15.2009
Holy Crap! A DLC already? I'm so buying this game. You wait months for other games after release, and Borderlands has one announced even before release. Awesome!

they say a full sized expansion? this may be the first expansion of decent size that wasn't an mmo's since oblivion.

I'm really, really excited for this. I think I won't mind dropping the $10 on both the PC and XBox 360. I do hope free stuff comes along in the future, even if it's just stuff like new gun addons and stuff -- maybe Team Fortress 2 has spoiled me. But free stuff is cool too.

I'm excited for this, and future content. I may even get them on both systems, if I have the cash and they're really well polished. Though I do hope free stuff comes along too, even small stuff like new gun addons and stuff -- maybe Team Fortress 2 has spoiled me, but cool stuff is nice as well as stuff you have the choice to pay for.

Questioner Will there be DLCs for Borderlands?
Randy Pitchford Yes, and we will announce the first one 2 weeks BEFORE the game hits store shelves.

THAT'S what they said. Why is everyone so upset? That they did what they said?
Zombies... I love zombies and stuff, but this is getting too much for me, almost every game has zombies in it nowadays... Like this one, too...
Nevermind, I think the only solution for this is to kill all zombies!!! >3 RAWR

It looks freaking sweet, can't wait to pick up this next week!

bapenguin at 02:45 AM on 10.16.2009
The teams in charge of bugs and playtesting to polish a game are completely different than a team that's in charge of actually creating content.

Biohzrd451 at 02:53 AM on 10.16.2009

It's funny no matter what a company does there always seem to be people unhappy with it, damned if you do damned if you don't I suppose.

I welcome any new content to a game to expands on the original game and gives us more play time from it.

Syphous at 03:21 AM on 10.16.2009
Zombies are like Jell-o, there is always room for them! And like Mrxknown_JG said, at some point you have to finish the retail game. They should be happy that they can add DLC to a game, otherwise there's a chance we'd never see this at all!

Hawkwood at 03:30 AM on 10.16.2009
That looks really great. The only way the whiners would be right is if the game doesn't have enough content to begin with, then the DLC would looks like a ripoff. But it really looks like Gearbox will deliver with this game.

hedgehogaj at 04:50 AM on 10.16.2009
Zombies - Humans that can be mercilessly slaughtered without feeling guilty! Right up until that one behind you starts devouring your think meats.

I've had enough zombies invading my non-survival horror FPSs though.

Wow, a lot of positive reactions. I was surprised and smiled at the news, but I wonder what makes Borderlands so special that it transcends the ethics that we hold other games to?

What I want to know is: will this DLC change the game version, like Burnout Paradise, or will it just be an add-on like Fable II? If it's the former, then it has the potential to divide the player base, and that's never good for co-op.

Biohzrd451 at 05:22 AM on 10.16.2009

Never really been upset to hear about DLC, and I think it may be an area you have to access so it could possibly be like fable 2, where the other people have to download an optional patch to play with you.

txshurricane at 05:33 AM on 10.16.2009

Maybe "ethics" is a bad word to use, and I have never opposed DLC...I just can't believe that this one game makes all the haters disappear.

I hope it's like you say. It would suck to be caught up in all of the Fall game buying, and be left out of some Borderlands co-op just because you already bought four games and don't want to spend another $10.

pheriannath at 05:33 AM on 10.16.2009
More content is always great, but I don't like shelling out extra money to get DLC right when a game is released. If they space it out well, it'll be very welcome indeed.

Deriaz at 05:34 AM on 10.16.2009

For me, I think, it's the fact that this game is shaping up to have a substantial playtime for me that makes me glad to see even more content for it. I played Champion: Return To Arms for more than a hundred hours total, even if I never reached the cap. I loved the skill tree, and the random weapons and armor that dropped. So anything that will let me relive that, but with guns, is a plus for me.

As for how the DLC will work, it says "Zombie Island" in the title. I would assume it's like Fable II -- you can go there if you have it, but if you don't, it won't even occur to you you're missing it. Though that'd be neat if they followed Fable II and let you download something to join your friends in co-op on the island, especially for those that may not have the cash right away but still want to fight Tanks-- I mean, er, big, scary zombies with their friends.

smurphster at 05:59 AM on 10.16.2009
i don't see any problem with this... they said they were working on DLC long before release so its no surprise that one is almost ready. plus with estimates of 100 hours playtime (high end) for one run through the campaign, i can't complain. of course that opinion may change once we get the game and play through it.

i wonder how far you need to be into the game to access the DLC areas. maybe it scales to whatever level you are. that would be cool.

Sabre at 06:08 AM on 10.16.2009
I hate it when they do this.

blakepro at 06:56 AM on 10.16.2009
The thing I dont like is when the "DLC" is content already on the disk and you are basically paying to unlock it. (You can usually tell this is the case when the download is extremely small. Like 100K)

I think this could be a lot of fun. There are plenty of games I played like crazy and wished I could download more. (I'm looking at you Resistance 2 co-op!!!)

Anyway, another alternative they could do (doubt they would) could be an option where you can go into the island with your friends, but unless you have purchased the DLC, you wont get any money, experience, or loot while there. (but you can still go and help your friend beat it) I can see a few problems with that method, but it would let people experience it and get a taste of whats on the Z Island.

smurphster at 07:09 AM on 10.16.2009

i may be in the minority in saying this but the experience (literally, not "XP" points) is the part i play games for. sure loot and character development is fun and may enhance the experience, but the enemies, settings, missions, and people i play with are what really make gaming fun. so being able to play on the island would be good enough for me. if i REALLY enjoyed it i might buy it later on.

blakepro at 07:49 AM on 10.16.2009

Me too. Thats probably why the idea appeals to me... lol... Also probably why they would never do it.

Shayagor at 09:55 AM on 10.16.2009
Wow...such great news!! More zombie apocalypse training FTW!

Mrxknown_JG at 01:44 PM on 10.16.2009

Actually they didn't do what they said. They said "two weeks before release", and yet this wasn't announce until yesterday. Which was only 5 days before release. So no they are liars, crooks, and thieves. BURN THEM!

Just kidding folks, but still something had to change their planned announcement. I just hope it will be sometime before we see it. Cause so much is going on, I wouldn't buy DLC until I've done a good part of the game.

Jackel at 06:47 PM on 10.16.2009
Hmmmm. Zombies. I love me some zombies, so this will probably definitely be a first purchase.
