Pandemic Studios Closed, IP Remains Intact

Electronic Arts announced today that it is closing Pandemic Studios, developers of such co-op titles like Mercenaries 2 and Lord of the Rings: Conquest.  With the closure comes around 200 layoffs as well as Pandemic founders Josh Resnick, Andrew Goldman, and Greg Borrud leaving the company.  The studio's last game will be The Saboteur, releasing in December.

All of this is being done under a cost cutting and streamlining measure by Electronic Arts, one in which their workforce will be reduced by some 1500 employees by April, 2010.  Pandemic was acquired from VG Holdings group as part of the Bioware acquisition in 2008.

EA will move the remainder of the Pandemic teams to their LA offices and continue to build franchises based on the Pandemic IP.

It's also rumored that EA has notified the Command and Conquer 4 team that their jobs will be up when the game releases next year, as well as several layoffs within the Maxis team at EA.  Ironically as part of the Pandemic announcement, EA has hired on someone to reignite the C&C brand.

It's also noted that Might and Magic creator Jon Van Caneghem, who recently "transitioned out" of his role as president of Trion World Networks, has joined EA to lead the Command and Conquer brand with "a new digital model that is going to re-ignite the fan base for this franchise."

We seem to be ending the year the same way we started it.

Really sad to hear that. I enjoyed the games those guys put out.

EA is too big and the smaller studios they've acquired are turning into layoff victims. how sad. i wonder how some of these studios would have faired w/o EA. sad thing is EA probably has exactly what they wanted in the first place, the IP. they're letting a lot of talent go in the process

I hope Mercenaries 3 will still happen. They hinted at going to India in-game.

@W4R Eagl3

The only thing bad about that is EA has a tendency to run IPs into the ground with sequel after sequel.

Granted they have done good with some of their games but their track record is horrendous.

This is what I feared after the economy tanked. As smurph said, the smaller studios are targets for "cost cutting"

Yeah but I think it would still be cool!
