Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure Co-Op Review

The sound of parents' wallets screaming

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure is one of the most unusual games I’ve ever played. It is much more than just a game; it is a media juggernaut including a toyline, an adventure game on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii, a platformer for the 3DS, and even a light MMO on the PC or Mac. The various components work together seamlessly due to the innovative design of the toys themselves. It is incredibly polished, and it’s clear that careful thought was given to even the smallest details.

The most likely entry point into Skylanders is picking up a Starter Pack for the system of your choice. I chose the Xbox 360 version, which comes with the game itself, three non-random Skylander figures, and the Portal of Power. This latter piece of hardware is a dongle that plugs into the USB port of the Xbox 360. (Other versions include a wireless Portal.) Once plugged in, the Portal lights up in an impressive rainbow of colors. As the game starts up, you are asked to place a Skylander figure on the Portal. When you do so, a detailed animation of the Skylander being summoned is displayed, and it pops up in the game. At any point, you can swap to a new Skylander in game by replacing the figure on the Portal of Power. Seeing an actual toy come to life in a video game is quite satisfying, and kids of all ages will love it.

A second player can join in at any time throughout the adventure. Simply turn on a controller, place a Skylander on the portal, and within seconds, P2 is up and running. Dropping out is just as simple. The campaign itself is a 3rd person action adventure, very much like Gauntlet Legends. There is a hub world, from which players can journey to other lands via balloon, pirate ship, or even by climbing a giant beanstalk. Skylanders earn experience throughout their adventure, with light RPG elements like unlocking upgrades and equipment are included. Simple puzzles and mini-games are sprinkled throughout the campaign, which can help break up action sequences that are at times, a bit too easy.

In addition to the 20 level campaign, a character in the hub world allows single characters to take on Heroic Challenges. There is a specific challenge for each Skylander, but you can change to a different Skylander to complete a tough challenge if you wish. And you just might want to do that, because the timed Heroic Challenges are pretty difficult, even for adults. I attempted a couple of them four or five times each with no luck. Overcoming challenges unlocks unique upgrades for the characters, helping make these Heroic Challenges a nice contrast to the rather simple campaign mode.

i must say, i'm intrigued. since the stats are actually stored in the figure, i'm assuming they aren't tied to your account either... so you could easily buy a bunch of figures w/ your co-op buddy and then share them on top of playing on either system. very cool! i wish my kids were old enough for this!

I was skeptical at first, especially with the fact that you had to purchase the accessory and individual figures to get the most out of it. However, I admit that I am also intrigued. The fact that the stats save on characters as opposed to game data is pretty neat, and the fact that you can use them on different consoles is also quite nifty. The gameplay itself sounds like a lot of fun and I think I would genuinely enjoy it.

As for the price of admission...I thought it was going to be more. I just looked it up and Amazon is selling it for $70. Seeing how retail games go for $60, $10 more for the accessory and three figures isn't too shabby at all. It's very tempting, and a game that I initially disregarded has suddenly found itself into my Amazon Wish List for the holidays. Either that, or a half price Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal will be too tempting to pass up!

This really does sound intriguing! I used to always play stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh in it's hay day. It's kiddish, but it sounds pretty fun and it's the first time I've heard of cross-platform like this! Possible buyer right here.

I do want to try this, but I think I'll wait till it goes down, or see how well it is supported before I buy into it.

That said, if this were pokemon, japan would straight up shut down, let alone the rest of the world. I'd also prefer a digimon one, or something else with a huge backlog of characters. it seems weird to pull spyro's old corpse out and shower it with a bunch of made up characters.

Marc - I'm glad I talked you into getting it during the TRU 3 for 2 week )

My two boys (9 and 6) have had this game since launch. Actually, I was betting on it to be very good and had both boys save allowance since May to buy two extra figures each on launch day for their "own". I am VERY glad I did The game really is great, even if it is on the easy side of things; sort of like Lego Star Wars after you get all the red-brick power-ups. The exception of that are the reoccurring boss-Kaos battles. Those can be challenging but in a fun way.

Both my boys absolutely love the game as well and the personalization of the tangible characters for them is enormous. I know some will be turned off by the extra costs, but at $8 it is inexpensive enough that encouraging saving money easily puts it in reach of young kids. They also like bringing them to school to show classmates and over to friends house where they have a Wii (we are playing on PS3).

All-in-all compared to other video games I've spent $50-$60 dollars on and were utter junk, as well as the plethora of toys abandoned and littering the house that they just "had-to-have", Skylanders is about as good as it gets in value and fun for both the boys and Dad together

Just keep your hands off my Trigger Happy and Boomer!!!

It seems Skylanders has been a significantly bigger success for Activision-Blizzard than forecasted! It, along with MW3, were sighted as reasons for raising Q4 revenue based on initial sales. This is excellent news for anyone playing the game as well; likely increasing and accelerating both expansions of Skylander characters as well as additional content!
