Sonic Superstars Will Be the First 4-player Co-op Sonic Game

At last, Sonic and Tails will get to team up with friends in this upcoming platformer.

Remember when Sonic Generations came out in 2011, and everyone loved it despite the obnoxious final boss battle? In the years since, Sega has stubbornly refused to make a sequel despite the obvious financial incentive to do so. That will finally change this fall when Sonic Superstars arrives on consoles and PC. It's not called "Sonic Generations 2," but this one clearly builds on the 2.5D visual style and gameplay of Generations. Even more excitingly, it will also feature 4-player local co-op!

Superstars takes place in the Northstar Islands. There, Dr. Eggman has teamed up with Fang the Sniper (the weasel character from Sonic the Fighters!) and "a mysterious new adversary" to convert the islands' animal population into robots. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose will have use brand-new Emerald powers to stop the villains and save the day!

Sonic Superstars

Features:

  • A New Spin on a Classic: The 2D Sonic high-speed side-scrolling action platforming you know and love, reimagined with fully 3D graphics, new powers and abilities, an all-new setting, and new ways to play! You've never played classic Sonic like this before!
  • Play as Your Favorite Characters: Choose from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose and take advantage of their unique abilities to blaze a path across the Northstar Islands as they race to defeat Dr. Eggman, who has teamed up with an old nemesis, Fang.
  • Harness the Power of the Chaos Emeralds: Multiply, swim up waterfalls, change form, and more with the powers of the Chaos Emeralds.
  • More Friends, More Fun: For the first time ever in a Sonic game, play through the entire campaign with up to 3 other players with drop-in and drop-out four-player local cooperative play.

The game's reveal trailer showcases the team of four heroes running through a variety of beautiful environments, including a neon-colored area in which the protagonists transform into pixelated squids. We also see the foursome bouncing through at least one Sonic 1-style bonus level, which looks like a blast. During a boss battle with Dr. Eggman, Sonic performs an impressive new move, summoning a horde of Sonic clones to attack the evil Doctor's egg-shaped robot.

Sonic Superstars will arrive on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Steam, and Epic sometime this fall. In the meantime, you can visit the game's website and sign up for the newsletter to receive a free classic Amy Rose skin when the game launches!
