To No One's Surprise, Guitar Hero Greatest Hits Announced

Marc "DjinniMan" Allie February 16th, 2009 at 11:12 PM

I'm going to try to make it through this news item without calling any Activision CEO's Satan.  This will be difficult for me, as it appears that the milking of the Guitar Hero franchise will be strong as ever in 2009.

During today's Activision Blizzard conference call, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith boasted of a "robust lineup" of three new Guitar Hero titles dropping before the midpoint of the year: Guitar Hero: Metallica in Q1 as well as "a new Guitar Hero game for the Nintendo DS" and "a separate greatest hits compilation Guitar Hero game" in calendar Q2, (through June). In case that's not clear, the Guitar Hero Greatest Hits pack (or GH2 as we're likely to think of it) will include "full-band versions of some of the most popular songs from previous Guitar Hero games and will be made available for the 360, PS3 and Wii."

Remember how you could import all your Rock Band 1 songs into Rock Band 2 for a few bucks?  That was really cool.  But hey, why not give folks the oppurtunity to spend some more dough on songs they already bought once before?  I know, I know: the drums and singing weren't in the previous games, but still... this reeks of an easy cash grab.  Mike Griffith, your new middle name is Voldemort.  (Told ya I wouldn't call him Satan!)

"I love the fact that activision is milking the franchise and pumping out lot of full games a year, because it means more tracks that i can spend my money on at a lower cost than DLC.Its interesting that everybody (and i realize its not everybody, but the kotaku article is just dripping with it, but what do i expect ts kotaku) trashes on activision for milking the cash cow of the franchise for releasing say three games in one year (plus the DS version), when that is probably much less total songs than HMX will release this year for RB2 as DLC and at a much higher unit pricepoint per song. Further I expect that those people making that argument typically are not only not accusing HMX/MTV of milking a cash cow but actually praising them for it as they go on to spend the same amount of money as it would cost to buy all three GH games on roughly half the number of RB2 DLC songs (50 50 85 = 185 songs for ~$180 for GH, and $180 buys you 90 songs at the $2 price point or ~130 songs if you average cost is ~1.50 per track if you are buying significant $1 sogns and bundles that end up at usually $1.65-$1.85 per track) or buying all or nearly all the songs anyways in RB2 and paying double the price those would be if they were arranged as games of 50-85 songs each. It cant of course help that Bobby Kotchik (or whatever his name is) seems to be a triple AAA asshole in the way he comports himself to fans and his competitors, but oh well. Personally i think neither one is milking the cash cow, they are just determining somthing that people might want ot buy via market research/knowledge of the industry, producing it, and then selling it at a price where they can generate enough sales to maximize their profit frm the transaction, ie capitalism in action. Even better that both companies have a slightly different method of delivery so that the consumer can differentiate between them and gravitate to purchasing the model that they like the best if they are strapped for cash and cannot easily follow both. Personally announcements such as this tend to sap further my already low desire to really buy any RB2 DLC for this year, at least until i have some idea of when a RB3 is coming, id rather save up and apply funds towards an actual new game, than towards tracks for a game ive already finished. Excepting that next time they come out with something that is narrowcasted to my precise tastes in goth/industrial (past examples Siouxsie or NIN) im sure ill break down and buy it anyways."

Now i know this is a long post but let me add my bit..

I love that they are giving me so many options. If they're able to put out so many games per year, then great! wouldn't other game companies do the same if they could? Aren't they trying to make money too? Is anyone forcing people to buy these guitar hero games? no. you have a choice. I love both guitar hero and rock band, and i KNOW i am not alone in saying that i would love to go back and play some of the older guitar hero songs on other instruments. Who wouldn't like to go back and sing Freebird? or play Six on drums? How about Play With Me on vocals? omg. yes please! It sounds like it "reeks of an easy cash grab" and yeah, maybe it is. but it also happens to be what a LOT of people have been wanting. they're supplying our demand. Our economy in action.

You would think they would patch the USB port stuff.. Its just silly to have to unplug stuff that you usually just leave plugged
Yeah but I think it would still be cool!
Thanks for clearing that up! I probably won't buy it though.
I recently picked up a 360 after nearly five years of Warcraft, so... well, I have some catching up to do. My current game libra
