Gears of War 2: Road to Ruin Details, Review

Next week Epic Games will be releasing a few pieces of Gears of War 2 content.  Included in with a package of multiplayer maps called Dark Corners, Road to Ruin is a brand new single player chapter that was cut from the original game.  What makes the content unique is the fact that there's two different ways to play through it.

"It's a 90-minute section that was actually snipped out of Gears of War 2, where Marcus and Dom are actually going to the Locust homeworld and they're basically suited up in Locust armor and have a choice - they can go in guns-blazing as they always do, Rambo-style, or they can go with a more stealth approach,"  the game's producer, Cliff Bleszinski,  told Major Nelson's podcast.

You'll actually get achievements for playing the content both ways, so there's more incentive to go through it twice.  It's the first time console owners are getting their taste of cut content from the Gears franchise, even though PC owners got to play a special level in Gears of War 1 that was cut from the console version of the game.  Many were surprised to never see that offered as DLC.

So while it all sounds well and good, perhaps the newest DLC isn't as memorable as the Brumak level from Gears of War 1 on the PC.  Joystiq played through the content and they came away less than impressed.

There isn't much else to Road to Ruin. There are no interesting or original fights, the areas you run through look like the other Locust parts of the game, and the stealth stuff (which is the lone novelty) falls flat. The mission follows the generic pattern of engaging a group of enemies, clearing the room, climbing a ladder, pulling a lever, rinse and repeat. If you're looking for a wonderful and new campaign experience, understand this road to ruin is a deleted scene for a reason.

Ouch.  Sounds like we'll need to wait till Gears of War 3 for our next great Gears co-op experience.

I have to say I'm quite tempted by this, extra 90 minutes of game play is quite a lot actually.

I would only want the multi-player maps for use in Horde though really... are they all 'compatible' or are they just a select few?

Locust homeworld? Did I miss something? I thought they were native to Sera.

they've always lived underground

@zonf: they're all "compatible" with horde although they're not all ideal as i'm sure you've noticed from the current selection of maps.

i'm definitely picking it up for both the maps and deleted scene. were people expecting the deleted scene to be something spectacular? have they not watched deleted scenes on a dvd? i always assumed this scene was cut for time constraints and maybe it wasn't up to par with the rest. that doesn't mean it won't be fun but i certainly won't get hyped up about it.

Wouldn't homeland be more appropriate then? Homeworld is misleading.

Yes Smurph I agree with the people getting disappointed, I mean really it was deleted for a reason and for me just being able to see what was cut is sort of a plus. Its kinda like in L4D they said one of the original concepts was to have a huge city and for the survivors to find their way through it, however they noticed the testers found one path and stuck to it to get out of the city... still I would have liked to have seen it in action.

That issue could easily be resolved if they further develop their random map generation. Imagine an open ended city that randomly generates each time you play (or certain parts of it anyway).

You could even have two teams of survivors moving towards the 'finale'.

A game with all 8 survivor characters is inevitable. Anyway, this is talk for another thread.

I always enjoy seeing things that have been deleted from films... really shows how much of a good job editor type people do. I mean, have you seen the deleted scenes from Iron Man? Whoever decided to change the start sequence was a life saver!

Sounds great. I normally don't listen to reviews on the web.

I never talk when I play online on COD. No one really says anything worth listening to, or no one talks whatsoever.
