Lost Planet 2 MAY Feature Couch Co-Op

Not a couch, but close enough.

Undoubtedly the most asked for feature on our site when a game is announced is "couch co-op." Couch Co-Op or split screen co-op allows two or more players to play in the same room on the same console with one copy of the game. It used to be the only way to play a co-op game until online modes came around, but thankfully it's not a complete lost art.

The good news is Lost Planet 2, which features four player online co-op, could see a two player couch co-op mode before release next year. The game's producer, Jun Takeuchi, had this to say:

"We are actually working on two-player splitscreen. It's not easy, but if we are confident that we can do it, we'll let you know."

Takeuchi worked on the recent Resident Evil 5 and its co-op split screen. One which caused a bit of a ruckus because of its implementation. Instead of utilizing the full screen, the game held the aspect ratio of 16:9 and stagger the displays - leaving a lot of black space. Some people like this method, others do not.

When asked if Lost Planet 2's implementation, Takeuchi said it's more of a hardware limitation than one of aspect ratios.

"Technically, cycling between two split screens, you can actually say it took visual RAM, you still have to work with two sets of AI and physics and so forth at the same time."

We'll keep our fingers crossed that we get split screen at all in Lost Planet 2, as of now it's not guaranteed.

I really hope they implement the split screen, its a definite buy for me if they do. Too many co-op games are one person per console, requiring you to buy 4 copies of the game. I just want some co-op couch time with my roomates!

I didn´t like the display for 2 players on RE 5, But Hey it´s 2 player co-op! I preffer that instead of nothing. I´ll keep my fingers crossed too.
BTW: this game reminds me more and more of monster hunter (PS2).

I didn't like RE5 split-screen at the beginning, but after a while you get use to it. I never notice it anymore; I only remember that it uses part of the screen when blog-posts mention it.

I dont mind when they crop them down, but I prefer when they do it like Resistance 2 where both screens are stacked on top of each other and the black space is on both sides. That way, I can use my TV's magical stretch/zoom function to fill the space. I dont mind the slight distortion, My TV does a good job with it by stretching different parts and zooming different things to fill it in with minimal stretching.

ANYWAY, If this game gets split screen, it will become a must buy for me. Especially if its split screen AND online at the same time.

4player split is best, correct AR and no wasted space, haha

i may consider buying this game if it ends up having couch coop, otherwise no thanks Capcom

Ha, is the first line in the article referring to me? I remember giving you guys quite the hard time about split-screen and couch co-op stuff. ^_^ Great article, and it has definitely put Lost Planet 2 on my radar.
