Torchlight 2 doesn't support couch co-op gameplay.

Six players can play via LAN or system link.

Can I play with my Steam Friends? What's a Runic account?
Yes, full Steam integration is available. That said you'll still need to register for a Runic account which gets you access to the forums and ties your game to other Runic games. You can import your Steam friends into your Runic account. Yay!
How do you begin a co-op session?
Start up the game, choose or create your character, then select either Internet (requires a Runic account to login) or LAN. Either way, you'll then be presented with the server browser which allows you to join or create a game.
If you create a game, you may set parameters for the number of players and level range. You may also restrict your session to friends-only or password protect it.
What are the network options of Torchlight 2?

How does experience and gold work for co-op in Torchlight 2?
Experience is shared by all, gold is dropped per player.
How does dropped loot work for co-op play in Torchlight 2?
Each player gets their own individualized loot drops.

Quest rewards are randomly generated for each player when the quest is taken.
How does game progress work?
You keep your items, gold and experience, but you will not progress in your own game. If you're on even footing with the host player or ahead of them, you'll progress as normal.
Do enemies scale based on the number of players?
Enemy levels are based on a number of factors including the area and host player level. When more players enter the game the enemies become more difficult.
