Doom Classic Now Available for iPhone. Has 4 Player Co-Op!November 03rd, 2009 at 8:51 AM by Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo

id's timeless classic DOOM game has found it's way onto another platform, the iPhone/iPod Touch.  I believe this makes it the game's 4,371st different platform - including the calculator, handheld, console, downloadable, web, java, and toaster based versions.

The iPhone version  includes four episodes: "Knee-deep in the Dead," "Shores of Hell," "Inferno" and "Thy Flesh Consumed."  There's multiple control configurations, custom soundtrack support and quick save options, but the best part is the game supports four player co-op via local wi-fi play.

The game will set you back $6.99, which isn't too shabby for a full featured version of the game.  If you're looking for another excuse to pick up DOOM, this is probably it.

Co-Op Classics: DOOMJuly 31st, 2009 at 6:56 PM by Marc "DjinniMan" Allie

For the past few Co-Op Classics columns, I've been trying to hit some of the key co-op games of the past.  Double Dragon and the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game are on most people's list of classics.  Today, we move on to what many consider to be the most influential game ever.  This game spawned hundreds of clones, and almost singlehandedly birthed an entire game genre, the first person shooter.  A technical marvel, a violent, intense atmosphere, awesome level design and downright scary foes, all wrapped up in a co-op package, make DOOM one of the greatest co-op games of all time.

Doom Coming to iPhone Next Week, Lacks Co-OpJune 11th, 2009 at 3:58 PM by Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo

Classic co-op game Doom is coming to the iPhone next week, though the version is actually based on the Doom III game.  Titled Doom: Resurrection, the game is rebuilt from Doom III assets and code - no small feat.

Sadly the game is going to miss a core feature that's been a staple of all Doom games, co-op.

Xbox Live Arcade Version of Doom for Less than $3April 14th, 2009 at 8:24 AM by Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo

It looks like I spoke too soon, another great co-op title just popped up on Amazon.com for a discounted price.  Doom, sporting four player split screen and online co-op, is available for less than $3 on Amazon's website.

The classic game defined the co-op shooter, and is available on more than 25 different platforms.  The Xbox Live Arcade version is the only version that natively supports internet play with voice chat.  Trust me, you'll want to hear your buddy scream when you "accidentally" shoot him in the face with a rocket.

Father of the Co-Op Shooters, Doom Turns 15December 10th, 2008 at 7:53 PM by Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo

Fifteen years ago a legend was released upon PCs.  I still remember the day my father brought home the shareware disks from a guy at work.  DOOM.  It was gory, it was dark, it was intense and it was 3d!  It was my excuse to buy a 14.4 modem.  Why?  It had co-op.

For the most part Doom was the father of today's co-op shooters.  Allowing four players to cooperate via an IPX/SPX network - it was you and your buddies versus the demons of hell.  At the time, there was nothing like it.

The game has seen 16 releases on PCs and 11 different console version, including a recent XBox Live Arcade edition.  The game has spawned numerous fan made conversions like Star Wars TC and Aliens TC.  There was even a movie...but we won't talk about that.

So fire up some Doom today, grab a buddy or two, and take down a Cacodemon to celebrate.
