PlayStation Vita Review

Review
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

I have a confession; I’m a gadget whore. If it plugs into a wall, it’s shiny, and has an “on” switch I probably have bought it or lusted over it at some point. Handheld systems fall into this realm and I’ve owned just about every one since the Game Boy. The problem is - I never give them the love they deserve - despite every intention of getting my money’s worth. I think part of the problem I’ve always had was most "portable" games just felt like an incomplete package and the systems they ran on a bit shallow. My expectation of them was too high as I wanted the console like experience. Sony’s PlayStation Vita may be a game changer for me, it feels like a portable console and the games have the same quality and swagger as their bigger console brothers.

It’s hard to play the Vita and not think, “ya know, this is what the PSP was originally hyped up to be.” Perhaps technology just wasn’t quite there back in 2005. Perhaps Sony was trying too hard to compete with Nintendo. It’s clear that the Vita isn’t trying to compete with iPod games or even Nintendo 3DS titles. Phone games are a completely different market, quality and price point. Instead Sony has done what Sony does best, make an incredible sexy piece of hardware and filled it with the technology to support it.

My physical launch line up.  Notice the plastic wrap on a certain game?  Yeah.

The screen is obviously the center point of the system and it’s absolutely gorgeous. While the screen might not feature an HD resolution, I’m not sure you could tell the difference, everything looks crisp on it. Colors are vibrant, viewing angles are solid, and the touch screen responsiveness is exactly as you’d expect. While your eyes are assaulted with beauty your ears should be pleased by the system’s speakers, which pump out some pretty decent spatial sound.

Sony is touting the dual analog stick functionality of the system as the second coming, and as great as that is, it should be expected from gamers. Modern console games simply require this kind of input, so to omit it from the design would have been a have been a huge mistake, just ask any 3DS owner who had begrudgingly purchased a Circle Pad Pro. Overall the layout of the controls are comfortable, though there is a baffling decision when it comes to the touch screen - namely it’s the only method of input on certain things. This goes for the main interface and the menus of several games, forcing you to take your hand off the controls, move it to the touch screen to navigate, and then back to the controls. Honestly, it’s a minor thing, but supporting both d-pad/stick navigation along with the touch screen just seems more natural.

Nice review. It sounds so awesome, yet I cannot be swinging that kind of cash right now. Perhaps when the system gets it's first price cut it will be more appetizing.

Are you gonna have a separate review somewhere (maybe Beyond Co-Op) for the launch games you received like Uncharted and Wipeout?

Nice review! One thing, though — I've read party chat is supposed to support eight people. Not so?

I'm pretty sure it's 4. The most I had was 3 in a party though so I can't confirm, but all the help documentation only shows 4.

Weird. Sony's site says eight people but the help says four? That's sloppy. I wonder if they originally meant for it to support eight and then at the last minute cut it down for some technical reason or other. That's a bummer.

It's definitely not very clear what the limit is.

I was going by what the manual had showed - http://manuals.playstation.net/document ... index.html

There's nothing in the app what soever that talks about the limit or even hints at it.

Yeah, the documentation is pretty craptastic. I did find one reference to eight people as the limit in there, though. I think the only thing for it is to put the feature to the test!

Ok, I'll update the review.

Just a note, in case anyone was wondering: I got a wi-fi model (no 3G), and it still supports Near when you're connected to a wi-fi network.

It's also worth mentioning that the downloads from PSN Store are still SLOOOOOW. Thank goodness for background downloads.

My system is "out for delivery" right now. I wanna go home!

Jealous of all you guys. I probably won't get one till a price drop or two down the road.

I figured as much. That's why I downloaded everything I could to my PS3, including a couple demos from the UK store I couldn't get directly on the Vita anyway — with any luck, USB sync will be much, much faster than store downloads.

It'll use IP based location to determine where you are, which isn't as accurate as the GPS one. But yeah, glad it works regardless.

It's a nice way to include those of us who don't have much use for 3G or GPS.

There is a way to play online and use full PSN access via 3G - just not through the 3G antennae in the Vita. 3G on the Vita is the same price as WiFi hotspot on your smartphone through AT&T (and I think the same as MiFi pricing from AT&T & Verizon) - if you have a smartphone you can pay for WiFi hotspot access which lets your Vita connect via WiFi (what it sees) to 3G (hello internet access) and do everything it can normally do via WiFi. Granted, it does require an extra device - but if you've already got a Smartphone, why not take advantage and not pay a penny more?

Great review, but you mentioned never feeling completely satisfied with handhelds...THIS I understand. I love video games and enjoy them on each of the home consoles, but nothing compares to the experience of a console...I guess mainly due to the more comfortable controller and larger screen for starters. Also, I am not someone who travels via public transportation, so playing on my way to someplace doesn't really work anyway, which is best for the other drivers around me anyway

I don't understand the need for these products if you already have a great system at home. I mean, when I am out I am usually doing something that captures my attention in some way or another, so I can do just fine without gaming until I am back home...if a really stale moment comes about then sure why not use my phone for a few minutes. Not to mention if you don't have a console at home and buy this, well, seriously?!

The advertising I have seen explains why these things exist almost too clearly, as they have a voice over basically saying that you'd rather sit home and game than go out and head to your job, well, now you can game while going to your job...seriously if you can't NOT game for that duration, perhaps you have a problem and therefore getting a Vita ironically proves your lack of a life. I really do love gaming, way too much at times, but even I see the terrible reality of this stuff...
