Ghostbusters Single Player and Co-Op Impressions

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo June 12th, 2009 at 7:52 AM

Perhaps it's the fact that Ghostbusters for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 starts with the old, film grain and all,  Columbia splash screen.  Or maybe it's the famous theme song that kicks in shortly after.  Whatever the reason, anyone born before 1985 is going to immediately have a smile on their face once the Ghostbusters disc hits their console.  It's been a long time coming since we've had a new and original Ghostbusters game, and it's finally here - and it has the entire, well most, of the cast backing it.

Something strange is going on in the neighborhood of New York as a large blue shockwave over runs the city causing ghosts to begin popping up everywhere.  It isn't long before you, the Rookie, meet up with some old ghost favorites like Slimer and the Librarian.  Egon, Ray, and Venkman (Winston shows up later) are all there to guide you through the tutorial in how to wrangle and capture a ghost.  Whoa boy is ghost busting ever satisfying.  You'll fire your trusty proton pack until the ghost is in a weakened state, it's at that point you'll switch over to the containment stream.  Throw out the trap and wrangle that ghost in.  The more Ghostbusters there are latched onto the ghost, the faster you can bring him down into the trap.  To mix things up you can "slam" the ghost against walls and objects while trapped to weaken it further and stun it for convenient storage.  All in all - it plays out exactly as an 8 year old boy imagined while playing Ghostbusters in his back yard.

Ghostbusters features nearly fully destructible environments, and really gorgeous environments to boot.  From hotels to the streets of New York, the graphics just pop off of the screen at you.  The Stay Puff Marshmallow man looks so good you could eat him.  Seriously.  Just about every aspect of the graphics jump out at you.  The ghosts in particular look great with plenty of "fun" varieties to capture.  The classic Ghostbusters humor is present throughout the game, no doubt thanks to the writing of Ramis and Aykroyd.   Really so far, there's very little to complain about with the single player game.

Of course you're probably wondering how the co-op mode works and plays.  I jumped into a few matches and so far it's pretty decent, if a bit lacking in terms of depth.  You'll start with choosing a character and base persistent weapon type.  Each campaign contain three missions of varying types.  These range from survival, time based capture, protect the artifact, or destroy the artifact.  There's also a "Slime Dunk" mode - though it's a bit more competitive than cooperative.  Some of the modes like time based capture are absolutely crucial to communicate, or else it simply takes too long to capture the ghosts and you'll run out of time.  Throughout the small maps various weapon powerups will spawn that you can pick up, these vary from shotgun style proton shots to a slime gun.  All of these are also available for purchase in single player.  As you complete missions you'll earn money which upgrades your characters ability based on your weapon.

Like I said, there seems to be a lack of depth though, and with only four campaigns in co-op things might get stale.  Because the better you do, the longer they last, it's hard to quantify a length in the co-op.  The first match I played in only had me and one other player and we ended up finishing the campaign in about 10 minutes.  Of course we also didn't get very much cash for that.  Another campaign with three players lasted almost 20 minutes.  The cash doesn't really get you anything, other than moving your position up the leaderboard.  Overall it's pretty fun, but it doesn't make up for the lack of a true Ghostbusters Co-Op Campaign.

We'll bring you a full review of the Ghostbusters co-op mode later next week.

Oh man, the game sounds awesome! Im jealous!!!

Good to hear that the game "feels" right, as in the story and writing tie into the Ghostbusters universe. Maybe they will put out some DLC for future co-op missions/modes or something.

I picked up this game last night and played the hell out of the single player mode. Let me tell ya it could really use co-op story. It almost feels built for it. But alas were left with the special relegated co op mode and I've yet to try it. Nobody else was playing it seems.

Let me say, you are spot on with this comment.

Yeah, there's no reason the single player can't have co-op. There's so many co-op moments, there's even the AI reviving you, etc.

I was pretty disappointed there.

Ghostbusters just screamed co-op from the start, we didn't even need to play as a rookie just have players choose which ghostbuster to play as and go from there, no one would feel left out during cutscenes but iunno.

Was really disappointed to find out it didn't support any kind of split screen . Oh well Borderlands in October right? lol

This game might as well be Sega Bass Fishing as the game-play reminds me of just that. From what I have played so far the cut scenes and dialog seem fun enough. The graphics are fine and the interface seems OK. The downside for me
is there isn't an offline system link option just xbox live which seems to be the trend these days. I think I will go play the old school arcade one if I need a co-op fix and play this one with a cooler of beers and a fishing hat.

It is amazing that in this day and age, with the popularity of co-op, that the developers decided to leave it out.

Crap, I wasn't go to buy any new games for a little bit, but I may have to pick this up anyway. If it's as fun as it is sounding, I want to support it.

I'm really glad to hear this, I've been looking forward to this game for, like, 20 years. Literally, because I hated the old GB games. I never felt like they did it right. I didn't think I would ever get to play what I had in mind. But this sounds spot on, yeah the co-op might be lacking, but it's Ghostbusters! GHOSTBUSTERS!!!! Oops, I think I peed a little.

Parflagush at 09:26 AM on 6.12.2009
At least Wii version features 2 players through the campaign. Still, I'll be hoping for some PC DLC to enhance the co-op experience.

The game sounds like a ton of fun , thanks for the review.

I'm just disappointed that people are grabbing early copies before release. I just hate that, digital distribution would allow for a greater control of access...

Anyway, sounds good. Sorry for the hate messages on Xbox Live. But I was jealous

I didn't know the wii version was any different I will have to look into that.

Oh the Wii version is almost an entirely different game. Graphically, multi-player wise, and I'm pretty sure in level design as well. I think it's the same game that the PS2 is getting.

Definitely Ray. His passion for all things paranormal is infectious!

This game is brilliant! I love it. Unfortunately, most of what makes the campaign so great is what will probably be sorely missing from co-op: a great plot (even though the dialogue can be weak at times), four photon pack configs (in co-op, you pick just one), and some truly spooky scripted moments.

I'll be playing the crap out of co-op over the next couple of days. Look for the co-op review sometime around the end of the week. In the meantime, Ghostbusters is holding a solid 80/100 on Metacritic, which is well deserved -- and then some.

justabaldguy at 06:10 AM on 6.15.2009
I'm hoping to get it this week from GameFly if I shuffled my queue properly. Although it does seem a bit unbalanced in places, especially with the small co-op playing in it.

Hey Jim, do they have iron sights on the throwers??

txshurricane at 07:22 AM on 6.15.2009

Har-dee-har-har. No, of course not. But they do have a sprint button!

meathelix at 08:22 AM on 6.16.2009
Is there any reason this review is ignoring the Wii version? It features full split-screen co-op for the entire single player campaign.

pheriannath at 08:42 AM on 6.16.2009
First off, this is not a review, and it is specifically based upon limited playtime of the 360 version of the game. I hope this clears things up for you.

bapenguin at 08:52 AM on 6.16.2009

We'll have full reviews of the Wii and 360/PS3 version soon. They are completely different though in their own right and need two separate articles.

This impressions article here is only based off a few hours with the 360 version.

meathelix at 08:57 AM on 6.16.2009
That's cool. Just wanting to make sure the people complaining about the game's lack of full campaign co-op know that there's a version to turn to before giving up.

Mrxknown_JG at 09:36 AM on 6.16.2009

It's funny you said that Baldy, I PMed him last night when he was playing Ghostbusters about the same thing

I think Iron Sights might be getting a bit old.

Can't wait for the review txshurricane. Any catch future reviews might have video reviews?
